I am wondering what everyone (anyone?) is experiencing for oil consumption and what is considered normal? I ran dino 15-40 for the first 10k and have switched to syn. However it seems to be using it-like a1 qt per 5k. . . . . . :(

Mine Has 30000km On It Now And Still Using Delvac 1 15w40 Motor Took A 2 Liter Drink At About 2500km And Not A Drop Since. Do You Tow Lots? If Not Motor Is Hardley Broke In,and You Should Switch Back To Reg Oil......put About 25-35000kms On Then Try Again

Just check mine yesterday and it was down a quart in 5K. I really don't consider that as using oil but some might. I did switch her over at 2500 to systhetic. It will break in but just at a slower rate.

had a tractor brand new diesel, burned qt every 10 hrs from get go. never varied, excelent tractor, good power. a qt every 5k is nothing. as long as engine is consistent. jmo. nelson

A forged piston engine will always use some oil....... can't really get around it. That's one of the many reasons manufactures have went to Hypereutectic Pistons (tighter piston to wall clearance).

1 quart in 5K seems totally normal.....

I do think the usage or consumption does have something to do with brand, when I was using the factory brand I would get 10,000 and did use a drop.

I started using Rotella dino it started using a quart every 5,000 miles or so. I change it myself and the product is so cheap at Walmart that I change it at every 5,000 reguarlly. I just now went to synthetic---as such I have no history for consumption there, I do agree with others it is nothing to worry about. My two previous trucks both used a quart every 4,000 from day one, the oldest one a 95 model is still in the fleet with a half million miles, the only thing weve done to it is change the cat. The 2000 model has 200,000+ also uses about the same interval and not a problem.

I've been using Dello 400 15-40 and my truck has never used a drop of oil.

I think I use more oil checking it than it has ever used on its own.

I was given some good advise on how to break in the engine and seat the rings. I think it may have something to do with it.

I didn't tow anything for the first 500 miles or go faster than about 60 mph. The main reason for this is to keep the rear end from overheating while the gears are new and breaking in.

What I did do is from the first day I drove it off the lot. I would wait until the engine was up to Temp. Then every time I had the chance Floor it and let the engine work really hard while getting on any freeway on ramps, Or stoplight to stoplight I would floor it until it was up to speed.
I would never do this for long sustained periods of time. But often and for short bursts. It would build allot of cylinder pressure and ensure the rings were properly seated to the cylinder walls.

At about 600 miles I hooked up the heaviest thing I could find to tow and I gave it hell up and down the steepest hill I could find, about 20 miles worth. Then I had all of the fluids changed.

Also a Delo user and neither 02 LB7 nor 05 LLY have ever burned oil in their normal 3,000 mile change period. 02 LB7 didn't even use oil after it was run 3500 miles on full crankcase of diesel after blowing 2 injectors. Changed injectors, oil, filter, etc, and oil pressure went back to normal with no engine oil use. Amazing!

I noticed I would burn oil to the tune of 1 qt every 4000 miles in the beginning. Now that I have 35000 miles on the truck it doesn't burn any oil.

i think it's got to do with seating in the engine?

I don't burn a drop with Rotello or the Amsoil semi synthetic I use now. Truck has only got 15k miles on it though. Oil usage will vary upon motor break in. My 2 cents neway.
