In the instructions it says you can disable the security feature of your truck, Why do you need to do this and what if any benefits do you get from choosing this option?

My guess is if you get a spare key made WITHOUT the chip in it, the truck will still start?

There is a resistor in each key. Its called passlock 2 I believe although I could be wrong. I do know that I had to bypass it with a box to get my remote start and alarm to work.

The factory alarm will also go off if you open the door so i think it disables all of it. It may make installing an aftermarket alarm cheaper so you dont have to you a DEI 556GW or other interface box to bypass it......

How come a cut one from the hardware works then?

Im 99% sure there is no chip in our keys, the last vehicle we had that used that was our 87 Vette. My wifes 04 impala key fits my ignition perfect but wont unlock the tumbler.

No chips in passlock 2 systems. The resistance value comes from when the key is turned. Not from the key itself. When adding remote start you need to read this value and it is dailed into the remote starter hardware. Now passlock 3 which I think is in the new GM900T series is chipped. The key has a + symbol on it. I have had a key made and turns and does not start the truck. Good to put in a magnetic keybox and hide on vechicle.

there are no chips in the keys . the disable feature might be so that if you either have a problem with the passlock or you have done a heart transplant to a different vehicle that does not have the abilitys to use the passlock system you can disable it so the vehicle can function. that would be my guess

the only chevy with a chip in the key was the vett, in the newer ones it was a diamond, the keys cost like $90 bucks to buy, and had to send away for 1, the most recent vetts, like 2006 and 07 have no key to start the car just a start button, the key has to be in the car thats all, it sweet,
