Hey guys, into week 2 of having my truck now, and love it. I've got a question tho, when it's warmed up, it makes an inconsistent old typewriter sound from under the hood that can only be heard outside the truck. Sound just like somebody is typing. I asked a while back, and 1 guy said it was normal. Haven't heard anything else. Does anybody else get this sound, or know what it is? I had some kinda big troubles right off the bat with the truck, so i'm a overprotective mother hen now........:o

Getting 19mpg combined with only 700 miles on it already. I'm REALLY happy with that.! Dealer said don't even bother looking at the mileage till it gets 10K on it....

Normal. Will change with time / oil changes / type of oil / many variables effect it etc. Do a search in the TSB section and you will find info.

That's the infamous Duramax "Engine Tick" which is supposed to originate somewhere in the oiling system. Mine has ticked from Day One and there are no known negative effects of the noise. You described it perfectly and can be heard most plainly standing next to the driver's front fender at idle.

Mine started yesterday. Two days after I did my first oil change. I switched to Royal Purple. Has me wondering if I should just use Rotella instead,

For what ever it's worth, when I switched to Rotella Synthetic the ticking all but went away, as well as the injector noise at 2500 rpm.

My tick pretty much went away too when I did my second oil change and put Rotella dino 15W-40 in it. As soon as the dealer did my third oil change (a free one) the tick came back. Don't know what brand oil they used. ?????????

Guys, don't over react! It's normal and varies from oil to oil but does no damage. I've got nearly 96,000 ticking miles on various brands of oil and don't even think about it. Relax! There were some that were all torqued up about it when we were all shaking out our 2001s three years ago and even a goober or two that were pestering the dealers to make it stop, including one hysterical git that was going to demand a buyback on the lemon law! Jeeesh!
