: Constant Smoke?
jr.parrish 12-03-2007, 01:24 PM I took a 600 mile road trip with a few friends in my truck this weekend, and at one point I let one of my friends drive for about three hours. As I was sitting in the passenger seat, I glanced over at the sideview mirror and noticed that very light, but still noticeable, puffs of black smoke were constantly coming out of the exhaust. I can't really see the exhaust from the driver's seat. The smoke was visable for about a second before dispersing, but this continued constantly the entire time I was able to look for it. This was not under acceleration, but rather at highway speeds of 70-80mph and continued to happen whether cruise was on or off. I am running the Predator on either 45 or 65 (I can't recall which).
Is this normal behavior for the LLY's and something I've just never noticed before? I've never seen my truck or any other diesel do this at cruising speeds. Am I having injector issues? I've checked the balance rates in the past, and #5 was running up to about 3.75 at idle, but the dealer said they were all within spec when I questioned them on it.
LarryJewell 12-03-2007, 09:08 PM try removing the predator and see if its still smoking, I'm betting that its just the added fuel from the programmer.
jr.parrish 12-04-2007, 02:04 AM I'll try that, but are people with programmers noticing the same thing?
GSStage2 12-15-2007, 11:11 PM I run the Predator and had a lot of smoke also, and of course when you accelerated rapidly it was ridiculous. I installed the EGR block plate and it completely went away. I get very little smoke now even when towing heavy. However I did this about the same time of the low sulpher fuel change...
ktmmotocross88 12-16-2007, 01:11 AM My Edge on 3 3 does the same thing

It is true that you can really smoke with a tune.
But cruising on the highway most of get an increase in MPG. More MPG equates to less fuel.
Black smoke is unburnt fuel. Your not getting enough air. Try changing your air filter.

Mine does the exact same thing with my predator on 45. I am also having to continuously clean my air raid filter and even clean it still smokes. Dang if i know but wish i could find out, my truck is white and it keeps my rear fender black.
HD4x4 02-04-2008, 10:46 AM PPE.......no smoke at all unless I get on it.....VERY good MPG....21.2 on the Hwy!
mainer 02-04-2008, 11:36 AM willing to bet its egr related

b_buechter 02-04-2008, 02:01 PM HD 4x4 -- how does that straight pipe sound?
my egr is blocked, it did it b4 and after i blocked it.
Fred Tol 02-04-2008, 06:22 PM How many miles on your truck, is the air filter clean, and does it have a galup feel at idle.
HD4x4 02-04-2008, 06:57 PM b_buechter..........Hard to believe, but its VERY Quiet, at least from what I can hear from the inside.......Kinda sounds like a Jet Turbine!
randy_the_hack 02-04-2008, 07:55 PM With my Predator... before I blocked my EGR, I'd fog the air anytime I romped on it, whether on +45 or +65. However, now that my EGR is blocked and unplugged, I don't smoke hardly at all.
YMMV...

if mine lopes a bit on idle does it mean anything?
Fred Tol 02-04-2008, 09:41 PM Have your crank shaft relucter wheel checked, mine came apart at 65k. it is covered under 100k warranty.
I have 167,000 miles on it and the filter needs cleaning now but last time I cleaned it I had someone follow me for 630 miles and he said it smoked the whole time. Not bellowing smoke but just constant.
