: Front Drive Axle -- What Type?

I'm reading my service manual (vol. 1) and there are different front drive axle types described:

8.25 inch S4WD
8.25 inch L4WD
9.25 inch

How can I tell which one I have? There doesn't seem to be any description of the different types or what models they apply to (and I'm not climbing under the truck anytime soon with a ruler!)

thanks!

Could you have mistaken F4WD as L4WD? .I saw no reference to the L4WD.

Here's what I found in Helms 2002:
F4WD Full Time Four-Wheel Drive
S4WD Selectable Four-Wheel Drive

I'd assume the 8.25's were in the 1/2 tons. I believe those had either the Automatic or Selectable Transfer Cases.
The HD's only came with the 9.25 with Manual or Electonic Select.

yup--meant F4WD not L4WD (though apparently neither the S or the F models apply on the 9.25's)

Ultimately, I want to find out how high the vent tube is placed on the front so I can determine if the water I ran through recently was high enough to get into the case. It looks like the vent tube is capped with (65) front diff. carrier vent and I think that tube is wrapped into a wiring bundle. I'd think that if the vent tube was pointed down, any water would have to penetrate the wiring bundle, then raise to the level of the connector on the case before any water got in... thoughts?

Thanks!

Found my front axle vent, clipped with wire bundle, on inside of driverside fender liner, about one inch below Underhood Fuse Block.
