which of the two is more likely to do the best job at not only getting the truck to start better in the morning but is also going to prolong the life of the truck? ive heard things about both but still dont know which is better.

The freeze plug heater was stock on the 6.2L engine. I have never had to use my heater, but I believe the block heater is the best since it warms the water in the head which means a better start in regards to combustion. The oil pan heater warms the oil which means faster cranking due to thinner oil.

What cougarjohn stated about function is true. The block heater helps starting more, BUT the lower end doesn't get any heat and the oil is slow to flow.

Now as for which is better, I'll say the oilpan heater is better for the engine by far...

If your really slick, you can install both.


I prefer the coolant heater. Both my 6.2's did not have them until I added them.

Where can you find an oil pan heater?

I've got both a coolant heater and an oil pan heater on my D-Max. I like this setup. While I've never used one, I've heard Wolverine is a good brand to go with. I personally ordered a Pro-Heat brand from Mr. Kennedy.

You think every 6.2 came with a block heater? I was told that my truck had no block heater, but I haven't looked at the actual block itself. Which freeze plug would it be in?

every one I have seen or had in my possesion have had a heater on the drivers side of the block in the center hole by the motor mount. Would it help out any to have another on the pass side center hole, to even the heat out?
