Ok I've read all about the hoot method and drilling the manifold while it's running but lets say you still don't have the warm and fuzzy feeling of doing that...

what's an average time to remove the manifold and reinstall it? How hard is it? I've read the gaskets can be reuesed? Yes or No?

thanks
the not so warm and fuzzy,

sounds like too much work to me when the HOOT method works GREAT.

I also was concerned about doing it Hoot's way...but it worked perfectly. So easy, you later wonder why you were concerned. Taking off the manifold is way too much work.

Same as others, both trucks no problems.Worst part was wheel liner,& it has to come out either way.

Wheel liner is easy to take out and works great. If you decide to take the manifold off you are in for a job that will take you a few hours.. Good luck... Try not to mess up the gasket if you take the manifold off...

Don't waste your time taking off the manifold. The standard procedure is to simply drill and tap it.

If you do it while idling, the turbo is running at a slow rpm. The chips are soft cast iron. The turbo has no problem passing small soft cast iron chips but almost if not all will blow out in your face as you drill and tap.

I have personally done many this way.

I was skeptical too and I used the Hoot method. It worked just fine. I wouldn't waste your time taking the manifold off.

Be a man!Hootie way rules and drill slowly. You won't be disappointed!
Seriously,I was afraid too at first but once I did it I found it was cheesecake.

I was a little worried about drilling into the manifold (hoot style) so I thought I would take the manifold off and drill. Then I took the inner-fender liner out and saw what that looked like. Said the hell with that, and got the drill and tap.

I've done the Hootie method more times then I've done Hootie......

Er...well, you get the idea.

I did the hoot way. If you take your time, you will have 3 chips total go through the turbo. Chips don't come out the backside until you break through to the interior of the manifold. I took my time, used a can of air to blow the shavings away as I drilled... and it didn't help needing to change batteries on the drill midway through install. And as for tapping it, they're getting blown out towards you so wear some glasses or something. Once you have the hole it's coming towards you not getting sucked into the manifold.

Pull the linner, start the truck, put on your glasses, drill and tap...your done, easy job.

the biggest pain was getting a proper tap for the threads that came with the pyro for the banks. Not really a big deal, but georgia where I previously was at was lacking of enough technical expertise to do anything other than use a dead blow hammer and cuss at it.

I come to alaska, and I go to the first hardware store I see and bam, there you go, 40 cents.

Did the Hoot method on my install, was very nervous at first too. Also added a running shop vac to the list with the hose near to the drill and it pulled the chips into the vac and away from me.

If you put it on the driver side, you won't have to take the fender shroud off and break the plastic connections.

So when you tap it are you using a tappered tap (NPT?) or going with a straight tap?

Hootie knows whereof he speaks. The only problem for me was dealing with the butterflies in my stomach from my deep rooted fear that I would F it up royally. Go slowly, turn the tap just a little bit at a time and keep the threads clear, and wear safety glasses. If I can doit. anybody can do it.

CMC-GMC I wasn't as worried about the drill and tap as I was about having to scrounge up the tools for the job, so went over to toolman tim's house and it took about 15 minutes. He did the drill and tap and I hooked up the wires.
The wheel well is the worst part.

You're not going to get any debris, just quit worrying and "do the hoot thang"

The tap you use will probably be an NPT, the taper helps.

Do like gradyghost did, dont accept imitations, get the original HOOT method. I plan having mine installed genuine HOOT.

Hey this is starting to go to my head.

Drilling and tapping exhaust manifolds for sensors has been going on for a very long time. I didn't invent the process but i think I was one of the very first to have the nerve to do a DMax where the sun don't shine

I'd be more concerned about stripping/breaking the manifold stud/bolts than the shavings ~ just lock the wife/kids up along w/all the other distractions and take it slowly, a step at a time. I had a dog that would steal my wrench sockets while working on the car. Learned to pen her up.

I just drilled and taped it then used a vacume with a small adapter to suck put the fillings and then let her idle for a while.

Installed my EGT last night but I removed the manifold it actually comes off very simply only took about a half an hour, the wheel well is what really was a pain in the butt.
