I saw GM's prototype for the 2010 Suburban with the new 4.5 liter Duramax diesel today at the RV Trade Show in Louisville. Great looking vehicle and should be a terrific candidate for a tow vehicle for members pulling travel trailers. I took a bunch of photo's,
click here to see four of them (http://irv2.infopop.cc/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=8076099152&f=1496073452&m=6161002164&r=6161002164#6161002164).

I really hope the diesel option is on all light duty trucks & SUV's. They will sell a ton of them.

Aside from that big black piece of plastic hiding the engine (looks like it could come right off w/ no ill effects anyway), the engine bay looks pretty clean. Looks like you will be able to get to stuff relatively easily.

I must say I am excited and disappointed at the same time. I wish the 4.5 would be in the half ton sub and the 3/4 ton sub would get the 6.6l. Oh well, guess I'll have to keep dreaming.

that 4.5 has as much power as a LB7 300/520 will be more than enough to handle a 13k tag trailer

im sure efi live will have updates on it with shortly after it is relased:D

There is no Quadrasteer. The similar style fenders, yes, but just a "Wider axle" as stated in some of the publications. Trust me, I'd have noticed.

I hope so too (I want one!) - it's a new Bosch controller (different to the LBZ and LMM) so we will have to wait until we can get our hands on one to start the process. I have no idea how similar or different this controller is, but if going the appearance of the ECM has anything to do with it there is ALOT of development ahead!

edit: Just looked at the photos - that's the same one they had on display at SEMA.

Yah this could possibly be the biggest thing Gm has done in the engine department since the small block. I know thats a big statement but this could spawn off all sorts of other diesel powered vehicles reigniting the diesel movement that never was in the 90's

If you go oversees, all small pickups have diesel engines, even GM. Ford Ranger's in Thailand look just like they do here, except they have very few options and diesel engines. In fact, did not see one pickup of van that wasn't a diesel. The tecnnology is out there, they just have to decide to bring it to us.

That is the truth. My old LB7 did great with a harley in the truck bed and a 12K tag trailer:D.

I want the 4.5 in a Yukon:D

310 HP.
520 lb FT Torque.
No Quadrasteer, just rear wheel flares with a wider rear axle.

That is a real basic spec sheet. You can tell they are not letting to much out of the box yet. I hope this thing tows like the Excursion's did with the diesel. I know it was a 6.0 No Go but it was better than a gas motor they offered.

I pretty much gaurantee it wont be an autotrac xfer case. They cant even make those live behind 8.1's.

With diesel being 30-40 cents more than PREMIUM GAS, why would anyone but those who need the extra torque for towing buy these things? Am I missing something? I would love to have a duramax tahoe but it is pretty hard to justify when I can get premium gas for 30-40 cents cheaper and the diesel option will likely be pricey as well. I love the technology but I think it is too late, the oil companies are going to kill these vehicles before they have a chance to get off the ground with the insane diesel prices.

"Current" diesel prices are indeed 30-40 cents above premium gas, however that's what, 10-12%? Doesn't a diesel return roughly 25% improved fuel efficiency over a comparable gasser? Seems like it's still a bargain. The ultimate question is how future gas/diesel prices will compare. If anybody knows that, they aren't telling.

The other incentive is the opportunity to run biodiesel, which has the potential of being much less expensive than dinodiesel. I just hope GM certifies this for more than B5.

see we LB7 and LLY guys dont give ross any trouble with our plain and simple ECM's...Its those LBZ and LMM guys that are a PITA :D :p:

According to Gasbuddy.com you are looking at a diference of 30 cents a gallon at least, from my experience with my LBZ duramax I get about 14 mpg. Interestingly enough diesel is almost a dollar more/gallon than this same time last year. Also biodiesel in my area is only 10 cents cheaper than regular diesel. The gas models of my vehicle have mpg approximately the same as what I get. The only benefit to me is the additional horsepower/toque of the diesel. How many people would by a duramax suburban or tahoe for more torque/horsepower? Additionally if you add in the cost of the diesel option which will probably be $3500.00 or more, it just does not compute. If GM manages to get more than 20MPG out of this engine then it might start to make sense, but I just don't see that happening. I would love to see this thing be a hit but I just dont see the oil companies allowing their profits to tumble any time soon.

I was really looking forward to seeing this thing at the Portland International Auto Show........wasn't there. I was a kinda pissed sounds like it's been everywhere else . What gives. I ask some guy :shootselfwho was answering questions on the Chevy vehicles where I could find it on display he gives me a blank look and then proceeds to tell me that they aren't going to make a diesel suburban in 2010. I just thanked him and walked off. Kinda Lame really. Porsche's Ferrari Maserati's Lambo's.......but no diesel BURB!
