First time for me yesterday.

I stopped at the ramp first to drop off the truck and trailer. Then went around the corner to get the boat from the marina. There was another guy loading his boat (similar sized to mine) on his trailer, so I decided to stay and watch to see if I could garner a few lessons. (and did I ever)

Once he got his boat on the trailer, he tried to get up the ramp- he was pulling with an F250 (looked to be a few yrs old, maybe 2002-2005). He was spinning his back tires big time :eek2:, and STRUGGLED to get up the ramp. The guy helping him was cussing at him to take off the %^$#@ parking brake Censored, but I clearly watched him do this. Made me really nervous....what to expect. Oh my lord, I didnt think this was supposed to be so difficult???

Anyhow, got my boat, loaded it on my trailer......the big moment (drum roll please).....released the parking brake, put it in drive, and WHOLLY COW (in my best Phil Rizzuto voice), it pulled the boat up the ramp without a 2nd thought. If you could have seen the sh-t eating grin on my face :D:D:D:D.....WOW, was I impressed.

Duramax diesel........nuff said. :grd:

even if you didn't need it, 4x4 is a lot better to put it in while backing down the ramp. in 2wd if you put it in park and set the parking brake the rear tires are the only thing locked. but in 4wd all 4 tires are locked (an exception is made if you don't have a locker up front) and maybe the difference of the truck/trailer sliding into the water.
I say tires made a big difference between you and the ford.

forget 4 lo just use 4 hi.

Good suggestion, thanks. I will put the truck in 4hi from now on. Having the truck slide/roll backwards is my worst nightmare.

Yeah, could be several factors...........wet ramp, tires, ramp angle, etc etc..........I've seen them all.

I have a Dodge 3500 quad cab 4x4 w/ 6spd & Cummins - people always asked me why I had the 4x4 - first time one needs it, it sure makes it worthwhile.

I love my 05' Chev w/ LLY and Allison, and 4x4 - tried the tow mode for the first time last weekend and was impressed with the engine braking.

Boat ramps can be a bit daunting, and we've all probably seen more footage for America's Funniest Videos on them.

I really shocked people the day I came driving into the ramp lot with my US Army Gama Goat and drove right down the ramp into the water....people were screaming at me, but of course she is built to "swim", and when I turned her around and came flying back up the ramp out of the water I thought this guy's wife was going to faint !
