: Alternate use for Onstar Antenna?
Aggie91 12-15-2004, 11:57 AM I have a question for whoever is "in the know" . .
I am going to add a car kit for my mobile phone (nokia phone & carkit) & I am hoping to use the factory mounted cell phone antenna that comes with on-star (my on-star is no longer in use). I think the onstar phone is a nokia based product also.
Does anyone know if the onstar antenna can be disconnected? I assume that the connector is a standard or threaded connect & is not "hard wired" into the onstar box. Has anyone looked at this to see if it is feasable?

JRKRACE 12-15-2004, 12:14 PM Don't know...I DO know that you can use the Onstar phone to tap off your existing minutes in your Verizon account, if you have one. I think it's 10.00 a month extra...
BarryD 12-15-2004, 12:39 PM As long as the phone is an analog phone it will work fine. I doubt the antenna is hard wired and if the connector doesn't fit there are adapters for most applications. Most radio shops could replace the connector with right one.
The mount could be used with a digital phone but the antenna would have to swapped out.

Aggie91 12-15-2004, 01:25 PM ya, the digital / analog issue is another thing I am afraid of. The phone I have is digital/GSM w/T-mobil, so it may be a mute point.
gardnerteam 12-15-2004, 03:26 PM Best use for the Onstar antenna is to air dry your significant others undies as you drive down the road.

Don't know if that was intentional or not, but a good pun none the less.):h
chuntag95 12-15-2004, 05:32 PM Aggie91, just drill you a 3/4" hole right in the smack dab middle of the roof like I did. You have had your truck long enough to avoid the nausea and cold sweats I got when I did it with a 1 week old truck. I don't know where the antenna connection is, but I can tell you the mic for onstar can be removed and replaced with the Nokia version. Hey, has Finland finished the flip yet?

only on the gen 6 onstar system, digital system MY2004 and above. you can add the onstar phone to your existing Verizon account as an added phone on the account, thought it was $20 though
Aggie91 12-16-2004, 02:11 AM chuntag95:
I have had this truck about 18 mths & I still don't want to drill any holes in the cab. besides that, I cannot get into the parking garage with the added height on the roof!
Also, We are supposed to bring out the new flip sometime early 2005 . . . I sure wish they would hurry up!!! We have not had a flip phone for 4 - 5 yrs.
Well, I got the car kit in tonite & it works! :D I currently do not have an antenna installed, but I am goin to "test" a magnetic mount (1 1/2" high antenna) and see how that works. I will try another antenna this weekend or next.
I leave for West Tx on the 26th, so I have to have something working by then. I still may try to track down just exactly WHERE the onstar box is. have'nt found it yet, so if anyone knows where GM buried that box, please let me know!
Thanx,

altered 12-16-2004, 07:32 PM The OnStar antenna in it's original form is a tri band antenna 824-894 MHz cellular (analog or digital) 1850-1990 MHz PCS (text messaging etc.) and 1575.42 MHz GPS.
If you can track down the wiring I should be able to tell you which cable runs the cellular band. I currently don't have any in stock to look at, but will early in the new year.
BarryD 12-16-2004, 08:29 PM I am not sure Altered has it right. Looks pretty much like a 800 mhz antenna to me. The wire wrapped around it isn't an antenna it's to stop the whistling. I was told by ONSTAR that the GPS antenna was seperate which would make sense. Not sure why the antenna would have also have 1850-1990 frequency for an Analog Phone.
PeachyHD 12-16-2004, 09:11 PM Hi, I have hooked my Nokia handsfree into the onstar antenna. I have 02 and I found the antenna lead behind gauge cluster. I had to have an extension built for my handsfree antenna cord. My nokia cord was about 15" to short. I am using digital phone and onstar antenna works great.

Aggie91 12-16-2004, 10:56 PM Thanx, PeachyHD. I will try to look for it over the weekend & see what I can find. If it actually works on GSM, I will let everyone know.
