Guys I am relatively new to the the diesel world, so disregard my ignorance on the subject. I am from south Mississippi and used to the warm weather. Here the past few mornings I have noticed it pretty hard to crank my truck. (Temps around 25). I am leaving tomorrow to go to Nebraska-Colorado to Pheasant/Duck hunt and was wondering up there (Temps around 15-10- or even 5) would I even be able to crank the truck. It does have new batteries. I would hate to get up there and my truck would not crank. Is this something to be worried about it not cranking? Any input would be appreciated.

As I've said before cranking in -40F ISN'T A PROBLEM unless the batteries are dead. Make sure you use a diesel fuel additive.

good luck

I am in NE and it isn't that cold here. The highs are getting into the 40s once and a while 50. THe lows are from 18-30. My 01 starts right off no problem Just use an additive and you will be fine.

Why the additive?

What year truck do you have? What weight of oil are you using? It it synthetic? When is the last time you changed your fuel filter?
These things can make a difference in how your truck handles cold startups.
The year is because if it is a 2001 you may need new glow plugs. That temp is not all that cold to start a diesel that has good glowplugs.
I am using 15-40 synthetic oil and I have not problems starting in temps below 0 deg f. Any colder and I would switch to a lighter weight. Synthetics flow easier than dyno oil when cold.
Bad fuel is big problem through out the US. If you have not changed it in a while or don't know when it was done I would change the fuel filter. after trying to use all the fuel in your tank. I would then change the filter and fuel up only at places that are reputable. This is not a fail safe salution but it will give you better chances. Reputable meaning places that sell a lot of diesel like truck stops or look around at places that get a lot of diesel trucks like ours fueling up. And then use a good fuel additive without alchohol.

I am using Chevron synthetic Delo 5W-30 all winter (and part of the summer) and have no problem starting at -30 F without plugging in for several days. This oil pours well at cold temps and provides almost instant oil pressure even at these cold temps. We use 'Arctic Blend" diesel during the winter here in the Yukon and it works great, no fuel problems without additives!

Additive is to prevent the fuel from gelling (fuel thickens up to point where it won't flow) Not all additives prevent gelling. So read the container before purchasing (if you do)
