I have been looking at a scanner for some time but the costs and having computers available that should be able to do this have been holding me back. I see now that free software is available for doing this with our computers, has anyone tried this avenue yet?

Do you just want to be able to read/clear codes? A cheapo Actron OBD-II scanner from wally world will do that for less than $100. You could also go the scangauge route, a little more $$, but more features and still the ability to read/clear codes.

Go to this site http://www.ae-diagnosticsolutions.com/index1.html and check out the ATS on the right top look at the Escan. it is the best generic scanner I have used and nicer than some factory ones. It only costs $800 and has free updates all you need is a laptop well worth the money. John Anello from www.autotechonwheels.com (http://www.autotechonwheels.com) uses it alot and I have two in the shop along with Ford IDS, Chrysler Star scan mobile, Tech II, and snap-on brick.

Yes, I have seen the likes and they are great. I have issues with paying for the computer when most any old computer should be capable to be used and has been paid for already. A few cables and I would think that your every day lap top would be so much better, not to mention that every store bought unit is outdated exactly when purchased.
I'm not making money with my reader; I would think most handy people are like me, the market should be huge in this area.. We are all just using this once or twice a year the cost is tough to justify because of taxes & wages being what they are.

Or look at obd-2.com to use with your laptop.
