Hello first time user. I was looking at full size chevy and came across you guys. Of course I have a problem I need to have solved. The full size guys gave great advice was just wondering about other thoughts. Just bought a 94 chevy 3500 dually 6.5 turbo diesel 5 speed tansmission. It has straight exhaust. It has no power what so ever. I mean will not turn wheels over in gravel no power. It starts, idles, and for the most part runs good. It has 113,000 miles on it. I live on a pretty good hill and when I go to climb it the truck just will not go until a few hundred feet then it comes alive. Same when driving down the road. Doing 55 or 60 slow up to go around a curve and it takes a 1/8 mile or more before it will get reveved back up. I was going up a pretty steep hil the other day and had it in low gear not bull dog but the next one up. Around 3,000 rpm. It was going well and all of a sudden lost power and speed but made it to the top. The engine light came on. I took it to auto zone they read it and came back "turbo waste gate problem". I have had guys tell me it is the injector pump. They say a plastic ring in pump goes bad and will cause this. I know that the 6.5 is not a power house but surely it's not this bad. Is there any thing I can do for myself to figure this out? Any tricks of the trade? I changed the lift pump, fuel filter, air filter and so on. May have helped a tiny bit. I pulled the vacum hose off waste gate and it has constant pressure on when running. Is that right? Well sorry for the long post but wanted to give all the info i could. Any help will be appreciated.

hello and welcome to the Diesel Place. when i first bought my truck it did exactly what yours is doing. i didn't get the check engine light until about a week after i bought my truck. autozone and advanced auto both got a turbo issue code. i replaced the MAP sensor under the Turbo power cover( LIttle black box that is held to the manifold with 2 screws. Also i found out once i got my boost gauge installed that my turbo was not working because my Vacuum Pump was dead. i replaced the Pump(got it from autozone with $25 core charge) and the truck roared to life. now it climbs hills like i still can't believe. Just a few things for you to look into. Best of luck to you and your truck. And again :welcome2:

Welcome aboard... there's a powerhouse of info on board here you can check through to get you get-up-and-go back again.
Take a look in the FAQ's and the turbo thread below in signature line to see if you can make sure you have everything checked out as far as you can.
Also, with a 94 with a 3500, check your injection pump model number and make sure it ends in 5068. (special, just for your truck - no one else has it ;) )

Thanks fellas. I have been reading some of the things you talked about. The vacuum seems to be working. When i took the lines loose from turbo there was strong vacuum on the line. I'll let ya know how it turns out.

I figured it out!

Wastegate solenoid can go bad even if you have vacuum, it isn't applying it right. Turbomaster mechanical wastegate controller (or a new solenoid) will ensure the turbo works right. If you put a boost gauge on you could see if the turbo is doing anything.
