I swapped out my 245x75x16 puny tires and went with 265x70x17 Toyo A/T's on chrome Hummer H2 17x8.5 wheels...not a huge change, and the actual difference in circumference is about 4%. This is an 07 Classic HD2500 4x2, with 7,000 miles.
I did get a bit of performance degradation (not too much, but noticeable), and it did goof up the speedometer and shift points (I have a Diablo Predator programmer ordered to fix those), and I get all sorts of compliments on the look of the whole package.
The PROBLEM is the steering...it is extremely heavy, and the steering wheel will NOT return to center from a turn without help. The steering wheel come back to center MOST of the way, but I have to manually straighten the truck out by at least a 1/4 turn of the wheel.
I have had the alignment checked, due to the negative offset of the wheels (the wheels stick out a bit farther), and it is a-ok. I cranked up the tire pressure to 70 in the front and rear (made very little difference, but did help some).
It does this all the time, at all speeds and all driving conditions. At hiway speeds (60-75 mph), the steering wheel does not budge unless I "push" it to change lanes....at 1/4 turn from center either left or right, the steering wheel will stay exactly where I put it until I manually move it, regardless of terrain, slope, etc.
I sure would appreciate any and all suggestions and or information anyone might have....I know a lot of folks use the A/T Toyo's and many use the Hummer wheels....
Thanks in advance
