: Towing Laws By State
Joshthemule 11-24-2007, 08:43 AM I'm sure someone has posted similar link but Here is another I've found. It gives all the info you could want about towing laws by state.

I'm sure I'm breaking some rule here but hopefully not. I assure you its not intentional. I know this site has products for sale but that is not the intent of this link. If there is a problem I'll try to post the actual page without a link to the site.
floriduramax1 11-24-2007, 08:48 AM Thank you very much.
RoadRunnerTR21 11-25-2007, 09:02 AM Good info! Thanks. I was surprised when I read through the list. I know I have broke the law now that I read what the limits are.
RoadRunnerTR21 11-25-2007, 10:04 AM What do they mean by "Flares Signs"? Does it mean you have to carry flares? If so, I have really broken the law...
WorkTruck 11-25-2007, 11:26 AM Notice how the following states
AZ
CA
CT
FL
KY
LA
NE
NM
ND
UT
say that the maximum gross vehicle weight is the "Manufactured Stated Gross Weight" so that flies in the face of those who say that the nobody cares about the manufacturer's GVWR as long as you are under the axle, tire and "registered" weight.

The 3-reflector triangle kits are allowed in lieu of flares and yes, those should be carried whenever towing. If you break down or become disabled on the side of the road according to DOT regs, you have 10 minutes to get your triangles or flares out and you would definitely be fined and probably sued if somebody hit the back of your trailer without them.

Joshthemule 11-25-2007, 11:49 AM I think most interesting to note is the license requirements. It would be interesting to find out what different endorsements are equivalent from state to state and if each state honors other state's endorsements.

Thanks! I never knew that after all these years. Is there a minimum number of triangles and minimum separation between them?
Pure Diesel 11-25-2007, 01:05 PM Min. is 3-triangles and the distance between them depends on the situation of your break down on the road.
WorkTruck 11-25-2007, 01:28 PM On a divided freeway or interstate highway, DOT says 10 feet, then 100 and 100 feet behind. If I'm with the vehicle and the flashers are going, I'll use 100 feet, 100 feet and 100 feet with the flares staggered so that the one closest to the truck or trailer is at the traffic edge of the shoulder, the second one is in the middle and the furthest one is on the grass side of the shoulder. Having them staggered like this usually lets motorists see all 3 at the same time and makes them more noticeable. If I'm leaving the trailer or the flashers are inoperative, I'll set it up the book way. On a 2-lane highway, book says 10 feet to the rear and then 100 feet and 200 feet toward approaching traffic which could mean front or rear depending on situation. Also need to consider hills or curves to provide as much warning as possible. Technically, this probably only applies to commercial vehicles but still a good idea to have and use them.

RoadRunnerTR21 11-25-2007, 02:16 PM Thanks! I appreciate it! I guess I better be looking for some reflective triangles.

Busdriver75 11-26-2007, 10:51 AM from the looks of that table, you can ride in a 5th wheel camper while driving down the road, i had no clue that was legal.

You can get a prepackaged kit with triangles and flares at your local Farm supply or an RV store for about 35 bucks. I always have carried that kit as well as fire extinguisher and first aid kit. Just thought it was common sense.
Fuelman 11-26-2007, 07:01 PM That's great info. In Arizona it's LEGAL for the mother in-law to ride in the travel trailer. (just kidding, maybe)
