: Injectors and Exhaust..

I wanted to start a new thread about this since the other one was way long and this info would be hard to find.

Just spoke to the diesel mechanic about bringing my truck back tomorrow for the injector tests and possible replacement. I went in there with smoke, fuel smell, etc...got the latest update for the computer.

Before I installed my new exhaust system I had the symptoms and all so I know its not that, BUT he says GM is having all kinds of problems with free flowing exhaust and EGR. He said the EGR is on the intake side and measures pressure thus measures the amount of fuel it needs. With a free flowing exhaust the pressure is not as high because of no backpressure in the exhaust causing the codes to be written and "possibly" causing injector problem.

He said I would have to put my stock exahust back on so they can properly diagnose the problem. I guess if I install the stock exhaust and the smell and smoke goes away I will just sell the exhaust and keep the edge. Fair trade I think.

Just an FYI for all of you with aftermarket exhaust..KEEP YOUR STOCK EXHAUST handy for just this reason.

The other truck he was looking at was in middle of a buy back from GM and when they found out it had straight pipe GM denied the buyback until the stock exhaust is put on and the same issues arise.

Also he said that the injectors are on restriction and GM will not ship new ones to the dealer if the truck has free flowing exhaust installed.

Since I am after longevity and dependability I may just keep the stock exhaust on it.

Hope this helps someone in the same boat
B.

Well if you get the finger mod for the EGR the truck will think the EGR is flowing just fine when you may have it blocked off.

is that what that mod does??? I don't know, I am debating to just put the stock exhaust back on, keep the edge and be done with the headaches.

I got my truck back last night. I had taken it in for the surge at low speeds. They are blaming it on my "oversized aftermarket exhaust". Is GM feeding them this info or do the dealers service departments make it up on their own? BTW there were no codes set when I took it in with my EGR plugged in. I unplug it except when going to the dealer.

this guy told me in order to get parts they have to talk to the GM tech department and they told him that if the exhaust is not stock then they will deny claim and service.

Although mine was showing issues of the code upgrade before the exhaust, the smoke and smell started pretty soon after I installed the exhaust system. I would love to keep it, but if its going to be a hassle and cause issues on the motor then I will just remove it.

HI All,

I haven't yet posted on this board about my troubles yet as I have been waiting for the outcome. I just got my truck back yesterday after the dealer having it 1 month to the day.

I bought my truck in late July and started having the issue of bad injectors after 423 miles. The problem was it was a sporadic thing with them acting up only after about 1 - 1.5 hours on the road so the dealer could never determine what was wrong with the truck. (I should say the dealer never took the time to figure it out). What would happen was the truck would start billowing black smoke and choking out. Almost like it was running on 6 cylinders, funny as that is what it was about doing. Then when I let off on the pedal a puff of white smoke would come out followed by a nice ping sound.-:t

Anyway, it was suspected that it was an injector issue, however, since it is on the restricted list from GM the dealer could do nothing until they determined what was going on. No codes and no lights were being tripped when the truck started acting up. They tested all the injectors' flow rates when the several times they had the truck and everything showed fine. They had the truck 3 times prior to the 15th of November with each time not being able to figure it out.

Finally, I got some video capture of the issue happening and took that in with the keys and said I didn't want the truck back until they figured it out. Suprisingly it still took a month to get it fixed. GM finally came out with the copilot for the Diesel engines and that is where they first saw an issue with number 2 injector, so they replaced that one. Then the problem occured again and so they replaced the most common injectors they are having problems with, 3 & 4.

So, I got the truck back last night and hoping that it is fixed. I have already started the process of a BBB complaint against GM and not sure what the end resolution will be. I really love these trucks, I am just not sure I still want this one.

A question I have for the techs on the forum is about any long term damage caused by the fuel just spewing into the cylinders and out the exhaust. I am supposed to get a call from GM today about some resolution to this issue and I will let you know how it turns out.Censored

The dealer now has another truck with the same 3 & 4 injectors having an issue. They think it was a possible machining issue from the factory so there are probably more to come.

Best Regards,

Cory:mad:

It is frustrating to be told we have not got a fix for your problem on a new truck. There are far too many of these tales on this forum and it is a small snapshot of the total number of owners. GM then tells you the owner, there are few trucks with your problem or blames it on something else (dirty fuel, now exhaust systems I have read). I have one of the "unfixables" so I just live with it till next year. In Canada, bleeding hearts that we are, there is no legal recourse as long as it starts and takes you to work. Thanx Geo.

Well the surge didn't show up on mine until about 2K miles ago. I've had the exhaust for about 10K miles. I told the service writer this but of course I think he just doesn't want to deal with me anymore.

Briano,
Have you unplugged your EGR? Does it make any difference?

Briano,
Have you unplugged your EGR? Does it make any difference? No I have not at this point and not sure I want to. I am pretty sure that when I install the stock exhaust it will still smoke and smell of raw fuel. Then I can take it back to the dealer and get the injectors replaced since they won't touch it with free flowing exhaust. I decided that I would leave the stock exhaust on and keep my Edge.

Compared to the LB7's, these trucks are so touchy with the slightest mod to them..even though the mod is beneficial and an improvement.

I just don't want to start doing all these little things like the egr plate, unplug it, finger things, etc... I'll leave the pipes stock. I have a buddy with an LB7 that will buy my SS exhaust.

Hek, I figure with the reflash and bad injectors replaced it should run like crazy along with the Edge!!
