: Red light on the Auto Dimming Mirror??
ZZ4x4 12-14-2004, 10:56 AM What is that red light that is illuminated on my mirror? It is just to the right of the "emergency cross" button. I've never seen it before? Or maybe it was green before. I don't see a description of this light in my owner's manual.
Anyone?
peekok 12-14-2004, 11:14 AM im not sure maybee your auto dimm feature is turned off?
ZZ4x4 12-14-2004, 11:17 AM I don't think that's it. The Auto dim feature is indicated by the left hand green light by the on / off switch. This one is to the far right. Could it be some sort of ONstar signal monitor ?
BK Tool 12-14-2004, 11:36 AM Same thing happened to me, looked up it's green, looked up again it's red, once more back to green! Go figure.

peekok 12-14-2004, 11:47 AM well i looked in the owners manual and the led that is to the left side of the on /off button is for the auto dimm, the led to the right side must be for onstar? im only on my first cup of coffee this morning , it seems like my wife told me along time ago that onstar light was for signal .if you go to mygmlink.com and enter your vin # you can look at all your manuals online
ZZ4x4 12-14-2004, 01:13 PM Well, you got me thinking. I checked the Onstar web site. Here is what it says.
Red - This signals that your OnStar system may not be functioning properly. Press the OnStar button to attempt to contact an OnStar Advisor. If the connection is made, the Advisor will assist you to make sure your OnStar system functions properly. If you cannot contact the OnStar Center, please take your vehicle to your nearby OnStar-certified dealership as soon as possible for diagnosis of the system.
Problem solved. Well not really solved as it looks like my truck is broken (again).

Has it gone back to green? Did you try to contact OnStar? Mine was red, but only for a few minutes. Works ok now.

Yup, It's OK now. Back to Green. Must have a been a signal problem for a little while. It was strange because my Engine light was also lit due to other problems. I thought maybe they were related....

killerbee 12-17-2004, 04:36 PM Has anyone used the telephone feature? Like? Dislike?
Mark_my_word 12-17-2004, 05:09 PM Waste of time and effort if you ask me. It can be a pain getting it to recognize your voice especially with background noise. Diesel chatter doesn't help. It would be a lot easier to have a keypad to punch in numbers.
The minutes are also too expensive. No 'free' minutes with this subscription.
Since its really only a cell I don't see why anyone uses it at all. I think a lot of people have the misconception that is is really a 'satellite' phone. It is a little more powerful than a cell but the technology is still cell.

Works great here in Ontario. I bought some minutes to have in case of emergency and have found it very useful. No long distance charges. Seems to work when my Digital Handheld won't.
killerbee 12-17-2004, 05:33 PM For a 12 month emergency type plan, it could save money over a cell phone, then again, it cost $0 to dial 911 on any phone.
But for those 10 times a year when you just have to make a call, better that a cell phone at $29 / mo.
Oilbrnr 12-17-2004, 05:52 PM Onstar suckered me into an additional 100 min. for $19 and rolled the trial 30 min in with it.
I use Nextel and love the service in the metro areas, but rural can be spotty here in AZ. The old Verizon analog system that Onstar uses has pretty good coverage.
I've also found that it has been nice to hit one button on the wheel, say 'dial, home' and be able to talk, all without taking my eyes off the road.
That being said, this is in my Denali XL which is real quite inside, not sure yet what the Sierra D/A will be like.
killerbee 12-17-2004, 05:54 PM Oh, I thought this was a satellite based cell conversation. It's verizon land based???
Oilbrnr 12-17-2004, 06:03 PM Si Senor.:D
Course that will be changing in '06 or '07. Can't remember the exact date, but it is detailed on the Onstar www site. Pre-mid year '04 units will need hardware upgrades. Later '04's need firmware upgrades, '05's are digital ready.
I might have some of the above wrong so visit the site. None the less, they are going from analog to digital in the coming years. Get ready for dropped unlock door requests!:p
killerbee 12-17-2004, 06:10 PM So much for my mexico plans.
No way, they are going to stop unlocking doors?
Funny reminds me, I called on-star. They verified my address and phone number, then asked for my pin. I said "I have no idea". So they gave it to me LOL. I said, huh, so anyone with my ph # and address can call you to get my pin?
" now can you unlock the doors so I can steal this vehicle?"
Oilbrnr 12-17-2004, 06:21 PM Just get 'u won of dim big 'ol CB whip antenni! That should get you at least down to Rocky Point, plus think of how cool that would look perched up there on your roof! -:t
I didn't mean that Onstar is dropping the unlock door service, I was joking that by going to digital, there are going to be a lot of dropped calls. :D
killerbee 12-17-2004, 06:47 PM Pheww, for a minute there, doors was all I was keepin it for.
Do you use a cell in Rocky Point?
BK Tool 12-17-2004, 06:58 PM I have it tied into my Verizon plan for $10 per month. Same usage as a cell phone... IE: Night & Weekends free, no long distance charges, uses the same minutes as your plan has.
When I get into my truck I have my calls forwarded to the thuck so if anybody calls me the truck rings. Push *72 then truck number then send to forward or *73 then send to return to hand unit. Much easier than looking for the cell phone. I find the out calling easy to. Got all my favorite numbers stored.

Anyone? In my area (sort of remote) there are few places that this happens to me. Basically your signal reception is gone. You've lost contact with OnStar and you will not be able to make a call with the phone with this red light on.
Max Power 12-17-2004, 07:29 PM I use the cell a little bit. I use it when I travel to the US because it can get costly using a Canadian cell phone in the US with roaming charges. I paid $20 If I recall for 100 minutes plus the 30 free minutes were extended to 1 year.
I find it handy in case I forget my cell phone people can still get a hold of me.

I too tied it into my verizon account. Voice activation works very good in my truck so far no problems!
