How often should the spin on filter be changed and what is entailed in changing it?

Spin it off, take the magnet off the gasket area, put magnet on new filter, lube rubber gasket with fluid and spin back on. Tighten one turn after gasket contact. Top off trans with amount of fluid lost. Job done.

IIRC manual says replace every 30k. Some here change at each oil change. I think that's overkill but I don't tow much.. If I did I would change it more often - cheap insurance ($9.00 per filter).

I fill the spin on with fluid after I put the magnet on. Every oil change for me......or every other if I'm on my shortened oil change intervall schedule

I was told by the dealer that the first trans filter change should happen @ 5K miles, then at the intervals specified in the manual.

I do every 5000 miles and I think the big Tansmisson guys here recommend this periodicity. I think it is due to where the spin-on filter is in the hydraulic circuit. As the filter gets clogged up with dirt, hydraulic pressure is reduced which can cause slipping or sluggish shifts.

Mike L. has the correct information on this.

And Ditto on the above changing information.

where do you all buy your filters? for $9.00. There are bullitins from Allison on non-allison filters that change the pressures and can damage the trans.

I buy my filters at the local Allison shop. They ARE Allison filters. Vendors on this site also have them for about $9

Snowsdog,

Go to the link below and it will show you the nearest Allison tranny dealers that would stock the filters....they are Allison filters that are the same as the GM but less money, alot less.

turbo, it's cake! Just go for it. Don't forget to pull the magnet off the old one, clearn it with a rag, then place it on the new filter. Top off the fluid, and you're good to go!

If I can do it, anyone can.

go to www.gmdieseltech.com He's a supporting vendor and has pretty good prices. I buy all my filters and the like from him.

For me, every oil change. . . It's fun and cheap.
