I just changed over to royal purple 15/40 diesel oil about 4500 miles ago I just checked my level today and was shocked that it was barely on the stick. I checked it at my last fill up and it looked like about half quart low and that was with it not sitting for drain back but about 3-5 minutes I've read that some guys switching to synthetic noticed higher than normal consumption for the first change. Also it looks dirty compared to the rotella I was using I'm thinking it might be cleaning up the system 01 with 82,000 miles

Mine starts burning oil at 5k or just before no matter what I use.

The rotella burns less it seems.

I agree, rotella works very well. Have never had to add any oil between oil changes.

keep in mind what color the royal purple is when you put it in there, its already pretty dark looking.

You get all kinds of opinions on synthetics. Some say you have to break in the vehicle before adding, some say it causes oil consumption , some say it helps against oil consumption. Truth is. Oil viscosity , ring condition , and seal condition all play a part in you condition. Its hard to point the finger on Royal Purple or your motor. The only way to tell is a disassemble the motor and check the health of the rings and seals. You can dump it and fill with Rotella. If it keeps its level then you know the Rotella is a heavier Viscosity.

I agree the only way to tell what is going on is a pull down of motor or compression test and leak down test this motor is broke in @ 82000 miles the only reason I switched to royal purple is because of winter here in michigan and I like the low flow pour point of the 15/40 synthetic plus I get a good deal at $4.25 a quart but I'll be keeping a good eye on the level now

I had an oil consumption problem on my '02. It started all of a sudden. I finally figured out (when some other symptoms began) that I had gotten a bad batch of fuel. I changed my fuel filter twice in 6000 miles and the oil consumption stopped. May be coincidence but it worked....
