I am going to pull the glowplugs to check for head gasket leaks/cylinder head cracks and also the injectors for spray pattern - what size sockets do I need?

Also, do I need any special tools (universal joints etc.) for getting into awkward places. I have a reasonably comprehensive toolkit but do not want to be making last minute runs to the store for tools.

Thanks

3/8" deep socket for GP's (in 3/8" drive worked fine for me), might need 1/4" drive for the GP behind the DP.

Not sure on the Injectors.

3/8ths or 10MM deep for glow plugs, 30 MM deep for injectors

and you might have to customize the outside a little so it fits properly or buy one from snap off

Napa has OTC injector socket (sure other AP stores can get them). A 6.5/6.2 injector socket has clearance cuts for the return line tips to prevent damage. The OTC socket has a hex on top for a wrench in tight places.

If you have a store nearby that does the loan a tool program, ask for the socket that fits the axel nut for front wheel drive cars. They usually have multiple sizes, you need the 30mm. Just make sure you get it on straight so as not to break off a return nipple.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/gr8pic/breaker.jpgAlso, one of these was $10 well spent. The four bolts/nuts to remove the turbo are right next to the exhaust manifold. Too close to get a box end wrench over them or to get a socket/ratchet on them straight.

Do yourself a favor and pull the passenger inner fender. It will keep you from developing a red forehead(the result of beating your head against a wall).:banghead:

your going to have to pull the turbo to get the 2 injectors off behind it. Trust me i just changed all of mine today. Pull the Batt box, inner fender well, turbo and heat shield, then its smooth sailing from there on out.

And a cheater pipe for the breaker bar. I think either King Kong or Superman installed my injectors at the factory. The 2 aft passenger side ones were a Censored to break loose. I almost severed my pinky finger when they did break loose and my hand went smashing into a heat shield.

mine were pretty hard too but i got them out with just the 1/2" ratchet. Id be carefull with a breaker bar removing those.

If you buy your injectors from Heath Diesel, they will loan you a socket. I think their is a refundable deposit, but it will save you having to buy a special tool.
