I have been thinking about doing a remote start on my truck to help it warm up in the mornings, and was wondering since im new to diesels....what do you do about waiting for the glow plugs to warm up before turning the key to start the engine all the way? A remote start would want to start it right away and not wait for the coil light on the dash to go first before actually turning over the engine. So how do people run remote starts on these trucks safely? Thanks. :)

There are remote starts specifically for diesels that will wait for that light to go off.

Almost all remote starts have the wait to start circuit. It's not deisel specific.

just a question is there anyway to get an alarm to work through your factory keyfob. or just the remote start if no alarm? i would like to keep it simple and like the fob for what it is.. unless i went to a digital fob from a manf.

Just do aftermarket. The add-on starters only work as far away as the OEM remote works from, and that's about 10'.

who offers a nice set up.. like digital fob that will show if the truck is started and if the alarm is messed with. and that is easy to install

My factory remote works from about 125' -clear line-of-site.

A basic aftermarket one works from 500' and an LCD remote works from a 1/4 mile. For what you'd spend on an add-on that worked from a car length away, you could buy a nice aftermarket that did a lot more than the OEM add-on. Your choice though.

Is there really a big need out there for remote start from 500' to 1/4 mile away? Is this practical for anything? Just curious.

I work on the 5th floor and my truck is parked 300 feet outside the building.

I work at an industrial plant and can't see the truck until I'm within 100' of it. The remote works from the other side of the plant which is about a 1/2 mile away. It takes 4 minutes in my Cushman to get from my changehouse to the building to walk through going to the parking lot. When it's 100* outside, or it's 20* and there's frost, that 5 minutes makes a big difference. Not only that, but the motor is warmed up as well. Also, when there's 3" of snow on the ground, the window is warm and snow's melting. there's been mornings when my shift leaves and some guys spend 10 minutes dusting off the snow, scraping the windows, or trying to get the doors open because they're frozen shut, and I just drive off within 1 to 2 minutes.

Once you own one that works from a long range or at least 500', you'll know why it's nice to have one. I've installed a bunch of these for the other people at work. The ones that have bought a standard keyless/remote start have bought an add-on timer that has a calendar and you can program it to start the vehicle anytime you want. If you don't get back to the car, the remote start shuts down after 12 minutes and goes back to normal. If 12 isn't enough, it can be re-programmed for 24 minutes.

These sound like good features and uses for long range capability. Do you have any indication on your activation device if the truck actually started or not - any feedback transmission/led or?

The ones mentioned above have a small LCD screen that communicate with the brain of the alarm. If it's shut down for some reason or times out, then the remote beeps or vibrates, however you have it set. If the alarm is triggered, it also tells you. That's good because if your in a store and someone hits your truck hard enough to set it off, then you can run out and catch them in the act. My wife's car was sideswiped at the mall here not long ago.
