: Do Bug Guards/Deflectors/Shields Cause Mirror Vibration???

I have an '04 GMC 3500 with TTT mirrors. Since catching a stone and getting a rather large chip in the leading edge of my hood, I'm interested in getting a bug guard/deflector/shield. I have considered several products made by EGR, Lund and Auto Ventshade, which I understand is a division of Lund. I'm looking for one that will stand away from the hood enough to allow me to clean out the debris that may collect behind it. However, since I regularly pull a 36' 5th wheel RV, I want to avoid any that will cause excesive vibration of my TTT mirrors, therefore distorting the image of any traffic approaching from the rear and sides. Of course, I'd also like one that is somewhat stylish, but looks are secondary to function. The customer service folks at both Styling Concepts and Truck Specialties as well as the enginers at Auto Ventshade all seem to think that mirror vibration is a definate possibility, but couldn't say anything either way with any certainty. Does anyone have any experience with a bug guard/deflector/shield that will meet my expectations, or am I chasing a rainbow?

Thanks for any experience that you can share!

Had the dealer install one on my '01 3500 dooley before I picked it up and I have the stock tow mirrors no vibration. Had the dealer install bug sheild on my '04 Sub and it whistles....quite annoying on a 14 hour trip.

I have cured many-a-vibration/noise by removing bug shields and window visors. From a technician's point-of-view they suck.

Mine do not whistle or make any noise.

I have TTT mirrors and a vent shade bug deflector, no problems with vibration at all. I also have the ventshade things over my doors and you can hear wind coming in the windows. Take them off and no more sound.

my bug delflector is made by stampede. It didn't cause mirrors to shake but it did cause rubber trim around winshield to vibrate but I just squirted some black winshield sealer silcone under it and sealed it down and the noise went away. the place where I bought the deflector said you could move it off center about 1/8" and the vibration would stop but that didn't work on my truck. I also have stampede "in channel vent visors for my side windows. They are fit inside the window channel and can be held there with the included 3m tape or you can just let them sit there. They are low profile and work good at keeping out the rain they don't seem to cause any noise either I like the looks of them over the vent shade ones that stick to the outside of the door.

Been using the Driver Design hood protector. No complaints, the only whistling is the wasted money I spent on an intake!

My '05 is the first truck of mine that is not getting a bugshield. I got tired of the mirror vibration and figured I'd live with the stone chips for once!

In short, yes they can.

3M makes a clear, protective shield that covers the front portion of your hood. I works like a bra but is clear and almost impossible to detect.

They also make for the lower panels of your truck to help prevent rock chips. I have a buddy at work who has them and swears by them.

Installed the LUND bug shield on my 02'. Worked great and looked great, except when I got up to 60 - 70 Mph the windshield trim would tap on the windshield. It sounded like rain. I only heard it when the radio was off. Asked the GM dealer about it and he said the bug shield was the cause for the noise. I removed the bug shield and no more noise.

I have the stock mirrors and a bug guard and no problems at all. No vibration or whistle... Not sure what could be causing it other than turbulence...

Ive Got A Stainless Steel Deflector From Lund Looks Good , Also Noticed That Pesky Noise. Got Buddy To Drive Once While I Looked For It. Turned Out To Be Rubber Flaps On Top Of Cowl, Diff Turbulance Must Make Them Do That. I Just Glued Mine Down, And Have Not Heard Since

Very interesting! Some of you have confirmed my suspicions that vibrations are certainly possible, others of you seem to be having no problems. Interesting, but not particularily useful in helping me with a decision. ;)

The One That I Have Is Good You Can Get Your Hand Behind It To Pull Debris Out. It Dosent Flap Around Like Those Plastic Ones And Dosent Hit Your Hood Either. Gotta Watch Though It Will Bite You If Your Not Carefull When Opening Hood

I have the LUND stainless steel one. It does have a whistle and does get annoying on a 14 hrs drive. I looked at today and notice a large ding on one end. That would have been a big chip in the hood!! Over all I like it and it look's good.

My EGR deflector made my Lucerix mirrors vibrate so much I had to remove it. I now have some TTT's and thought I would try the shield again. And yes the TTT's vibrate now too, but not so bad. When they are extended though it is worse. I will probably take it off again.

My bugshield caused the tapping vibration around the windshield, which was turbulence disturbing the molding around the glass at speed. I installed 3m Double Sided Tape under the molding, no more vibration or sound.

I got my bug deflector from http://www.weathertech.com/store/vehsearch.asp?item_group_id=5&make_id=20&year_no=2005&veh_id=265&veh_opt_choice_id=0 and don't get any vibrations or noise.

Some do and some don't. I think the shields that are closer to the hood may not be as turbulant.
