I have a leaking input seal(the one the ISS connects to)on my steering gear box.I DO NOT want a remaned box under warranty! Is there a seal kit for this? And is It hard to change?

yes there is. did it on my truck. you will need a special tool to reset the correct torque back on the bearing (the seal is vucanized on to the bearing) otherwise it will hum a bit when you turn ( does it on mine since i just kinda overtighten it a bit, didnt have the tool). I would take the bearing out and go to chevy with it, kinda hard to get the right one without having it. oh and also make sure you look at the little sticker on the front of the box to see what type it is to get the right bearing. here is how to do it:

1. Disconnect the ISS form the steering box by pulling out the bolt that clamps it down on to the shaft of the steering box (12 mm??)

2. dissconnect the pitman arm from the drag link (dont need to pull the arm off the box).

3. pull the two power steering lines off the steering box and cap them so they dont leak all over the place.

4. try to cap the two holes the power steering lines went into and un bolt the three bolts that hold the steering box in place and pull the steering box out.

5. using a vise, clamped the box in place so you can easily access where the worm shaft comes out (where the ISS connects to the box).

6. Use a punch or screw driver and hammer to unscrew the lock nut on top (flat with three slots in it, unscrews counterclock wise).

7. a little fuzzy on this but there should be another nut underneithe, using a punch again, unscrew it counter clockwise.

8. the bearing is under that with the seal on it and has a o-ring around the outside of the bearing that makes it hard to get out. you will have to fish it out ( i used a small screw driver through one of the power steering line ports to get it out). If you pull the worm gear up (the shaft you will be looking at) it should not hurt anything, just dont pull it all the way out.

9. once you get it out, put the new bearing in and new o-ring. then repeat the steps backward. I believe the torque on the bearing preload is like 10 ft-lbs.

10. once everything is hooked back up, add Power Steering fluid to the pump and turn the wheel back and forth form all the way on one side to the other and add fluid as needed. Then you are ready to drive!!

I will go into my shop and give you chevy's part number for the tool if you want it and the torque spec for the bearing preload. You can easily do this in a night if you have some pretty good mechanic skills and the right tools

Thanks 1925 great write up.
I could handle that job with the right tool.Anybody know if the dealers will do this? From what Ive heard they like to just throw in a remand if it is just the seal leaking.

you are better off to just have them replace the box if you take it to the stealer. with the amount of time it takes to change out that bearing, the labor would cost as much as the box

NO way.I`m keeping the box that came in the truck.GM will not replace mine with a NEW box. They only supply Re manufactured boxes done in Mexico. The play in them is terrible.I`ll fix my own leak if need be.

Oh i dont blame you! thats why i did mine but i would really think you would be better off doin it yourself instead of having to deal with the stealer and hearings some bull they feed you as to why they cnat fix it and you need a reman

I agree with you on replacing the seal. That is what I would do if I could do it over again. The dealer replaced a leaking box that worked great otherwise with a box that has the left turn goose (search threads about this). They replaced it again with new box that has been perfect so far.
My question is, where did you find out about the boxes being remanufactured in Mexico? The service rep told me that they replace with new boxes not remanufactured boxes when I asked. So was I B.S.'ed?
