Where does your temp. gauge sit when warm, and how long till you get to that temperature.
I'm not sure if it's thermostat time...or i'm just dreaming.

Thanks.

I may not live in Canada but I do live in Northeastern Maine which I would imagine has fairly similar climates. When my engine is warm, the temp gauge is on the line between the 160 ( I think it is) and the 210. When it is about 20F or so out like it has been over the past few days it takes maybe 5-10 minutes or so of idleing warming up and maybe another 4-5 minutes of driving to get it to that temperature.

Hope this helps, Jacob

well i usually sit around the first mark (70 or 75 C i think) right now at least. its around 0 C outside right now, in the summer i usualy sit around 95 C (30-40 C average).

my truck takes less than a mile to reach operating temp which is about 70-75 as well. Ed

Mine runs at about 85C after its warmed up,even when its -1C. I found when I first got it, it was running just over the 70C mark, which i figured was low based on the idea that I've never seen a temp where the "normal" operating temp is barely enough to move the gauge. So, I checked my thermostats and found one was stuck open, changed it and then it ran what I expected it to...ie higher then the first notch.

Mine sits on thicker white line between 70C and 100C, what ever that is. Takes about 2km to get to operating temp.

Thanks guys. Looks like it's time for a few t-stats this weekend. Hope the dealer don't rape me!

Let us know how the dealer trip goes .

I can drive for a long time before I hit operating temperatures, one of my T-stats is defanately stuck open.

What is required to change, gasket or rtv silicone? Big mess of fluid?

What is the DOWNSIDE to driving with a T-stat open?

Let us know how the dealer trip goes .

Well the dealer price is $54 a pop
Piston Ring price on a AC Delco is $35 a pop
This is for a 190 degrees

This is in Canadian $$

i had both t-stats stuck open and the downside was when the outside temps dropped, i set off codes for low coolant temp, had issues getting into o/d. and if i recall napa in langley bc charged me 85.00 for the pair of t-stats. if i recall it came with all the parts as the t-stats themselves are what seals it so no gasket required. you will notice a huge difference in cabin heat with good t-stats. Oh man if I could that kind of miles out mine that would be awsome! It would be a nice kick in the balls to all the people that laughed at me for buying a 6.5L!

560 on truck, not engine. There is a lot on the engine, but no idea how high. We have a '95 tho with either 558 or 568 k's on it and never been opened up.

Mine sat just above 80 degrees C until the weather went cold recently. When around 0 out truck barely went above 70. So I replaced them with ones from canadian tire $13.99 each and the rubber o-rings are a couple bucks each. Now it goes to about 90-95 after about 10 minutes.

I am working on attaching some actual temp graphs (with enigine speed, load &RPM) from my ODBII chip, but am having trouble uploading the attachment files - I will try again later.

In the attached files you will find graphs of coolant temps for January and May (cold <-25C & warm >25C). They also show how temps vary with engine speed and load.

The dates on the attached images will tell you the time period (January or May) and the vertical axis will identify the variable (speed, rpm, load, temp). The horizontal axis is always elapsed time.

Update:

Finally got to the time to change the T-stats today. Wow, kind of a pain in the ass to get at the housing bolts.
Boy does that make a huge difference though. I'm now thinking why I didn't find the time to do it earlier. Oh well, better late than never!

Thanks to all of you for the help. :)
