: Help Blown Engine?
Chasbro8 11-17-2007, 05:44 PM I have a 2001 Duramax Diesel with 101,000 miles on it and I thought I had a fuel leak because I smelled it. At first I did not see anything leaking. I got home after about 250 miles and what I now thought was oil leaking from somewhere above the skid plate below the engine is everywhere. I checked the oil level and it looked to be full but very thin and now the engine is running very rough at idle. I drained the oil and believe to have diesel fuel in the oil, alot of it. Can someone give me some useful advise?
HDGMC 11-17-2007, 05:54 PM Sounds like you may need injectors. Do you have the special warranty that was sent out to all owners on 2001-003 model years covering the injectors for 7 years or 200,000 miles?
Chasbro8 11-17-2007, 05:57 PM No, never heard of such a warranty
Chasbro8 11-17-2007, 06:15 PM Is this a common problem to have and does anyone have any idea what kind of cost I could incur?
HDGMC 11-17-2007, 06:16 PM If your truck is less than 7 years old, the injectors are under warranty. They have had trouble with ball seat erosion and cracked bodies. The original owners were sent a warranty "to be kept in the glovebox", but the issue is well known and GM should cover you under the special policy. BTW dumping fuel into the oil and rough idle are classic symptoms. Hope your truck is less than 7 years old as they fixed mine at no charge. If your truck is older than 7 years, I'd ask for "assistance" from GM as this is a $3500-$4000 repair. You may want to search under injectors+special policy
Chasbro8 11-17-2007, 06:17 PM Are injectors expensive?
Chasbro8 11-17-2007, 06:19 PM Thank you. Do you feel I possibly could have further damage since there was so much diesel fuel in the oil?
Chasbro8 11-17-2007, 06:23 PM How do I go about finding the best dealership to contact about repairing the injectors?
HDGMC 11-17-2007, 06:23 PM BTW you engine is most likely OK. The diesels usually seem to be able to tolerate the fuel in oil without issue. Since it's still running I'd think you'd be OK. Also many members have had the service departments clean the undercarriage of the fuel oil mess for no charge. Good luck.
HDGMC 11-17-2007, 06:30 PM Start a thread asking for dealer recomendations for your location. If you're in socal I'd recommend Lake Elsinore Chevrolet. They did a great job on my GMC and have a good reputation. Ask for Lee and you'll be taken care of quickly and professionally. I had my truck back in less than 24 hours. Like I said you have to ask, because if you live in Maine, this isn't going to help.
TheBac 11-17-2007, 08:56 PM Injectors. Common problem on the 01, but will happen on any LB7.
Please do not drive the vehicle to the dealer. Have it towed, if for nothing more than your piece of mind. I think more than one Cali member has recommended Lake Elsinore Chevy.
Here's a copy of the special policy:

You should not incur any expense.

x2 on that, if its coming out of the overflow you've got way more diesel than oil in the engine and it will keep pumping it in.
srode 11-18-2007, 06:10 AM Are injectors expensive?about $4000 to $4500 for 8 installed if it's not under warranty - get it in quickly to a dealer - your 7 years is almost up if not already.
sparky1562 11-18-2007, 02:27 PM Like everyone else said, injectors. The special policy is 7 years from the in service date. If the truck was bought before today in 2000, you don't qualify, but beg and plead! Get it in on Monday and find out! Don't drive it!
Firstclasslawn 11-18-2007, 04:31 PM Is this from the year, or original purchase date? my 3500 is a 2002, but it wasn't purchased till almost 2003
TheBac 11-18-2007, 06:14 PM Purchase date, just like a regular vehicle warranty.
