: Tow/Haul button
JC PAINT WORKZ 11-17-2007, 05:08 PM (not sure where to post this mods feel free to move to right place)
When i pull my 22' enclosed haulmark 8.5 wide thrifty hauler should i be pushing the tow/haul button? not sure.. seems like it takes longer to shift but also seems like she is burning more fuel. kinda new to the towing scene. but any comments and help would be appreciated..

use the tow haul button for your trailer. It will save your trany from shiftin up and down prematurally. You will use a little more fuel of course. Its normal .
BudTX 11-17-2007, 05:15 PM I use tow/haul whenever I tow over 5k for better performance, lower tranny temperatures and grade braking.
JC PAINT WORKZ 11-17-2007, 05:18 PM so does the grade braking only work when you have the tow button on? i wanna say my trailer weighs like 3500 empty and i haul between 1-5 bikes in it taht are from 500-850lbs each. should i be using it when empty too.. i think it would be a good idea with the grade braking. btw i have a tekonsha prodigy controller too.. it applies braking going downhill for you when braking i belive..

JC PAINT WORKZ 11-17-2007, 05:26 PM kool i love this site. so much to be learned.... love you guys..(not in the fruity kinda way) lol
kool i love this site. so much to be learned.... love you guys..(not in the fruity kinda way) lolSeems like the more weight on the trailer the better the trany works. My truck loves to pull.It pulls like a tank .
TRMN8R 11-17-2007, 05:56 PM Whenever I haul, I always use the T/H mode.............just love the grade braking feature.
7997redtail 11-17-2007, 07:00 PM At some point you will have the grade braking shift in and scare the crap out of you because it revs up to 4000 rpm. Way into the red zone. The first time this happened I looked it up on this site and found out it was normal. What i read was that the computer won't let the engine or tranny over rev.
Hope it right.
BIGBEN2004 11-18-2007, 10:13 AM Also using T/H made allows the Torque Converter to fully lock up. If you want your tranny to last as long as it can then I suggest using T/H every time you pull your trailer. It will keep your tranny temps down into a normal range. I also like the grade braking but like 7997redtail said don't be scared when it revs upwards of the 5000 RPM mark, it is normal and the second you touch the acceleration pedal it will up shift and not allow the engine to run in the Red Line marks.
OldSoldier 11-18-2007, 03:15 PM The manual says to use the T/H when ever your GCW is more than 75% of the GCWR. Yes, it takes longer to shift in each gear...that's how it supposed to work.
You might want to take a look at the manual, lots of good information in there.:D
Firefighter Rob 11-18-2007, 07:51 PM I use the tow/haul whenever im towing. heres the allison trans website with the frequently asked questions http://www.allisontransmission.com/service/faq/index.jsp?CategoryID=11
seems to have alot of good info, alot or reading though.
JC PAINT WORKZ 11-18-2007, 08:45 PM awsome ill have to check it out always nice to have links like this... thank you
STPETEBLUE 11-18-2007, 09:59 PM I switch into Tow/Haul anytime I get on the interstate, towing or empty. I like the way it holds the shift on acceleration, and I like the downshifts coming off the highway.
hss0p 11-18-2007, 10:16 PM Such a great trans for grade braking. Heading down the cuesta pass in san luis ca it works wonders.
Muddauber 11-18-2007, 10:47 PM Recently while driving in MN, in a rain storm, the tow/haul braking saved my butt when I was towing my 6000# trailer. Going down the hwy at 60mph when all of a sudden I came up on a car just sitting in my lane completely stopped. When I finished skidding I ended up only inches from their bumper. I feel that without it (tow/haul mode) it would have been a whole different story. I'll always use it when towing. During this episode the truck and trailer stayed straight as an arrow.

Use the button, works great. We love you too.
grannyred 11-19-2007, 09:45 PM I engage the tow/haul button when towing my 6500# trailer in stop and go traffic and entering onto the interstate highway. Once I grt up to cruising speed I disengage the T/H button, the RPMs drop and I reengage the T/H button without any increase in RPMs. Its a great feature, use it towing a load that causes your transmission to down shift when going up a grade.

Yo...my tach doesn't have the usual redline marks! Is it supposed to?
