Click on the link in my signature, and you will find many many threads about this.

Simply put, the T-Case pump sits on a clip in the rear half of the t-case housing. eventually, it breaks. then wears a hole in the t-case.

here is a link to the fix (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140732)

Instead of trying to read all of those threads, the answer is here. There isan oil pump in the T case that is driven but the shaft and as the shaft vibrates or shifts back and forth the housing of the pump rubs on the rear half of the t case. This pump is not clipped or held in place by anything other than sitting in some casting spots in the rear half of the case. after too much rubbing it will wear a hole in the case and the oil will come out. if you dont see it like myself then you will toast it. I had to put a new one in but look for the hole on the passenger side about half way up from the bottom of the rear section.

ZF6 Man, you are mistaken. There is a clip in there that keeps the pump from rubbing. When it fails...you get...pump rub.

But I already explained that above. With a link to the fix.

My bad then, because when I took my failed case apart there was no clip anywhere to be found must have been chewed up or something...Sorry to mislead

I found out about this the hard way. I had it break down on the road. The local stelership wanted $3500 for a T case in ATL and 2000 to install. Long story short, It isn't a bad job. I pulled it in the parking lot at the motel old school and had the nice dealership (Jeff Perry) in Illinois UPS one to me. I did this with no jack and basic hand tools. It took about 2 hours for me to do and I have auto experience, but no 4WD. Hopefully yo udon't find out the hard way.

I had no puddles from a leak but was driving non stop Il to Florida and back with a trailer. Ouch.

When "pump rub" occurs, is it a constant? When does it occur most? Over bumps..High speed?
Thanks

The pump turns whenever the transmission turns the driveshaft because it is splined onto the transmission tailshaft. The case is magnesium - very soft, very light. The pump has four lugs that fit into notches cast into the case that prevent it from rotating with the shaft. There is a spring steel "anti-rattle clip" that is over one of the lugs to prevent the pump housing from constantly shifting against the notches. It wears into the case and fails or just fails and then the lugs can work against the case constantly as the vehicle is in motion. Steel lugs against magnesium case and you get a wearthrough.

Welcome, aquaman, but you have now been "spoonfed" a repeat of a ton of information already in play for over a year and have also been given the links to answer your questions by reading yourself. You are welcome to the community but newbie status does not mean that you will get too much "personal tutoring" if you don't want to read on your own. Not to be harsh, just a word of friendly advice and a note to your obligations to join the group and we hope you do.

MAybe I should have taken mine apart when I had it out. I have a GM rebuilt one in now. I was told by the dealer that the rebuilds had a fix. Maybe he meant the fix was in.
