: Break-ins through the door handles

I would like to know if any one has heard about this. I have talked with three people, who own Escalades, and had their vehicles broken into. They said something about pulling on the handle and inserting a screw driver through the slots(somehow) and it opens the door. These three people had this done and their was no visible signs of damage from the entry. The thieves are doing this to steal the third row seats. Most of them didn't even know the seats were gone, till they needed to use them.
My question is "Are these the same style handles on our trucks?" Is there a remedy for this if this is a problem?

Why are they stealing third row seats?

I do not know about the handles.

Another member just started a thread similar to this a few days ago:

Tom

If clever thieves want your vehicle bad enough, theres not much you can do to stop them....sad to say.

Yes are trucks are just as easy to break into. You have a couple of options. There is a company that makes a plate that you can insert into your handle that will prevent them from being able to get in. I don't like this idea because they still do damage to the door handle.

The second option is disconnect the lock rods. Same disadvantage as above plus you now have know auxilliary way in if keyless entry quits.

You can also buy rear door handles and replace the front door handles with rear ones. This has the advantage of them not even attempting the break in because their is no lock in the first place. Disadvantages are keyless entry quitting again and they might just break a window to get in if they want it bad enough.

I would personally choose the last option.

The reason this break in method is so effective is because there is a switch in the door lock that disarms the alarm if you use the key to get in. If they break a window and get in the horn will honk at the lights will flash. An additional aftermarket alarm is also effective because if they use that method to get in the alarm will not be disarmed and the siren will go off etc.

What I am going to do is remove my door lock cylinders completely and plug them with some chrome plugs that I have. I am going to hide a GM keyless entry remote somewhere. I use my aftermarket alarm/remote start remote all the time so if it quits chances are I can use my GM keyless remote to get back in or on-star. If I didn't already have the painted escalade handles I would get the rear door handles for the front. This system should be pretty much fool proof except if my truck battery ever goes dead I will have to break a window to get it in.

I am also going to see if I can rig up an external stealth manual unlock just in case.

Their stealing the seats because they get $300-$500 for them. You can't buy them from GM assembled. They come as a parts set. They said the insurance companys will not pay for them if you get it from the factory. They said you get them from junk yards. But guess what, you could be buying back your own seat!!!!

Hey max power didn't you once tell how to put a flashing led light in just to look like an alarm? Pretty tricky thinking there.

Yes that will never hurt.

What you need to do is buy a 12 volt flashing LED. Wire the positive lead to a constant +12v source.

Then wire the negative lead to either the Brown ignition wire (actually any ignition source will work). When the key is on the brown ignition wire will be +12v so both leads of the LED will have +12v and the LED will not flash. When you shut the ignition off the brown ignion wire goes to ground and the LED will flash. No switches to forget to turn on, no relays, very simple and effective. If it only prevents one break in, it is worth the $10 that the LED costs.

Here is a product that is supposed to prevent this. It would not work in preventing the method of going in through the lock cylinder. I wouldn't waste my money.

I look at this as a bonus....

If I lock myself out with the keys inside, piece of cake ):h

Who needs Onstar?

Max I had a friend that shaved the door handles and relied on the door opener to get in. He had the same problem of it not working if the battery went dead so he ran a couple of extra wires to the door lock that dropped down under the front bumper, and if his car battery went dead he could run jumper cables to the new wires and get the locks to open up and then jump start it.

And WHY after all these years of making cars and truck's cant the manufacturers figure out a way to NOT open a vehicle door with a fr**in screwdriver.
I would make GM replace the third seat for free for designing something so stupid and neglegently (sp)

Ok I'm done

I thought of that too and it is definately an option unless the door lock motor fails. ;) Of course you could always install another door lock solonoid.

After market alarm. I have been told by several people that 3/4, 1 ton trucks with diesels are very popular for theft.

Second thing I did to mine was add the alarm. Old truck someone tried to steal twice in ten months....

Popular but not easy to steal. You pretty much need a copy of the key to steal it.

I plan on doing a mod very soon to protect against theft with a back up system to get in if everything else fails.

Look for it in the new mods forum. (Hopefully coming soon :D)

I have been told that the bas Censored s use float trucks or tow trucks, aswell.

Yeah, but those are the ones that work for the banks ):h

That would be the way to steal a vehicle. No one would even think twice if they saw a tow truck hook up to it.

You should hook up an external jumpstart port like semi trucks have so you could get power to run the locks if you needed to. Possibly a jumper set using the aux plug in the trailer connector to feed the battery?
