: DMAX DEAD in minnesota at exit 61 on 94 at citgo
MrsSpoolin 12-12-2004, 07:32 AM currently on kiosk in gas station. GM wants to store vehicle at tow lot until I, I FRIGGIN find a damn dealer to work on it. I know it is the wiring in the f-ing steering column. everything works hunky dorry with remote starter but when I "take over" from itit goes wonky. figure i can get to the igntn wires and just hotwire w/ remote starter bypassing passlock for me to start it. youknoow it is the wiring in the column beause key works sometimes with steering wheel in the right position w/adjustable tilt wheel.
if'n anyonehere can help me w/ ride, place to stay, anything, please call 218 739 9648 its the gas station ask for pace w/ the broke ass s-h-i-t truck outside the window. or come get my butt out of this place. i am about a gnats butthair from shooting the truck with my 45.
*edit* This is SpoolinTurbo on my wifes account.
Dmax Tim 12-12-2004, 10:29 AM Can't offer much but if u want Eric's cell # let me know and I'll pm u.
I'm not sure if he's here on Sunday.
BTW sounds like a remote start problem ,is it dealer installed?
Dealer may have trouble if it isn't factory.
fredw 12-12-2004, 10:48 AM post should read,
dead duramax due to remote starter problems
Bronco 12-12-2004, 11:23 AM Somebody needs to call MAXPOWER. He knows them remote starters!
BlueOx03 12-12-2004, 11:30 AM Check the big bail plug next to the steering shaft under the dash. It look just like the one where you plug in the juice under the hood. It's in a crappy spot and is prone to coming loose.....This looks to be a truck problem, not a remote start problem.

Max Power 12-12-2004, 12:06 PM By the way you have the wrong number posted.
Max Power 12-12-2004, 12:07 PM Actually it is most likely not the wires at the bale connector if it works with the remote start because most installers will wire up the remote start in between the ignition switch and the bale connector. so if it works with the remote start, it can't be there.
Max Power 12-12-2004, 12:09 PM Call me if you still need help. 204-749-2254 I see you are at a gas kiosk so call collect if you need to.
SpoolinTurbo 12-13-2004, 04:17 AM Well after I posted that on the wifes account, I got seriously pissed off and was just going to hotwire it straight up, use the remote starter to actually start it, and just get to where I needed to go (Grand rapids, MI).
When I yanked off the plastic from the column, apparently the company that installed the remote starter broke off the detent that holds the male portion of the ignition harness plug into the actual ignition key block dealio. I jammed it back in, and ziptied it. It won't come out unless the wires physically break out of it. The company that installed it for me used an excessive amount of electrical tape and with that they ended up making it so it'd work loose.
I am sincerely glad that it happened when I was at a truck stop getting ready to shut down and go to sleep versus it happening on the road while adjusting for a different position.
We made it, and I thank everyone for their help. I had put the correct number however about 10 minutes after I posted that, and having no time left on the kiosk that had 28.8 dialup to the net, we were up and running. I was too irate at GM roadside assistance's idea of "assistance" to even want to try to reply to anything that might have shown up.
GM wanted to tow my truck to the tow company's "secure storage yard" while I, I repeat, *I* got myself a f-ing rental car, hotel room, and *I* found a dealer that was "capable" of working on my truck. With myself, my wife, and my dog, that is completely unacceptable of GM to conceptualize that as service. I'm actually glad it's about out of warranty in under a year simply because it's obvious GM's concept of a warranty is skewed.
Days like this make me wish I just built my own truck out of a late 80's GMC crew cab and put a Cat or Detroit motor in, a stickshift, and called it a day.
Max Power 12-13-2004, 10:29 AM You are lucky GM didn't tow it. When they found the problem you would have been paying out of your pocket. Make the remote starter installation place pay for NEW parts to fix the problem.
This is why so many of us here stress how important it is to get a good installer for remote starts.
SpoolinTurbo 12-13-2004, 03:18 PM That's the only part that I have seen that is jacked up. I ended up looking at everything simply because I don't need some other piece breaking as well.
Max Power 12-13-2004, 07:17 PM There is absolutely no need for them to by anwhere near the igniton switch in the first place. The wires shoud be connected as close as possible to the junction block (as far as possible away from the switch) The problem with getting too close to the ignition switch is you add extra strain on the wires when tilting the wheel etc. This will eventually cause the wires to break at the switch or elsewhere.
SpoolinTurbo 12-13-2004, 08:26 PM Well, I guess I'm screwed there then eventually. I guess I can get a new portion of the harness given that everything seems to plug into stuff nowadays compared to being straight wires like my other truck. I figured that they would use the heatshrink tubing rather than just tape, but that's what I get for letting someone else touch the truck. Guess I will be doing my own work from now on. Sucks that you can't trust people to do stuff right nowadays.
BlueOx03 12-13-2004, 10:46 PM Not to totally defend your installer but if it's the plastic retainer I'm thinking of, I've seen them broke from the factory. You can only use heat shrink if you cut the wire and the only wire you should cut for a remote start is the starter wire for anti-grind. All the other connections should be soldered and covered with 3M Super 33. Many shops use other tape simply because of cost. Average "good" tape is around $.50 a roll, Super 33 is $4.50 a roll....I'm glad you got it figured out and I hope you have a good rest of your trip...
Ox
Max Power 12-13-2004, 11:10 PM I am with BlueOx Super 33 is the ONLY tape you will find in my shop. You can hold a lighter to it and it will not burn. Once it is stuck you pretty much need a razor blade to remove it. Fantastic stuff!
peekok 12-13-2004, 11:30 PM yeah good old super 33. before 3-m came out with cold shrink high voltage splices we used to always finish with a few rolls nicely halflapped and properly stretched, you could kiss your splice, good stuff.
oh yeah that was 13.8 kv
"Dave Mustaine For President" As in Megadeath? Sorry - not related at all, had to ask.
akdiesel 12-14-2004, 06:23 AM Hey SpoolinTurbo,
Who installed the system for you?
SpoolinTurbo 12-14-2004, 04:09 PM Safe and Sound on old seward. I plan on going there with my shotgun when I get back in alaska.
dmaxalliTech 12-14-2004, 05:52 PM I got a call from SpoolinTurbo yesterday, he said something about wanting to borrow my sledge while in town.....guess I know why now...
akdiesel 12-14-2004, 07:34 PM My father in law had his remote starter installed at there shop and he has had to take it in to them a couple of times already after two years. He said they did not solder a couple of wires and they came loose.
Max Power 12-14-2004, 07:41 PM Safe and Sound on old seward. I plan on going there with my shotgun when I get back in alaska.LOL. You are kidding right?
Victory Red 12-14-2004, 08:20 PM Plus everyone failed to mention that the super 33 comes with the cool little plastic container which makes an excellent storage container when emptied.
I just got done helping Maverick install his remote, I hope he doesn't come chase me down with a sledge if something goes wrong
Max Power 12-14-2004, 08:36 PM If you think those little containers are handy I can ship you probably 100 of them or more. I am sick of looking at them. -:t
BlueOx03 12-14-2004, 10:51 PM Yeah I've got plenty too, but I use them for odds and ends. Tony, you should seek out more positive energy in your life...
Ox
Max Power 12-14-2004, 11:02 PM Ox, you lost me
BlueOx03 12-27-2004, 10:27 AM Ox, you lost me

<HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Could also be the wires right at the ignition switch. I have seen it a few times on older trucks but never one this new.
Where are you headed? If you are headed north I could probaby help you get it hotwired good enough so you could make it here and I could fix it. I am 50 miles West of Winnipeg.
I could also likely help you hotwire so you could get it where you are going but you won't be able to shut it off.
