: Smog Test in California

I've picked something up on various threads that I think is a pleasant surprise but I wanted to be sure.

I had just assumed that my DMAX would require bi-annual smog, like all my gassers.

However, I've read that California, the tree-hugging, hippie-loving state actually *doesn't* require smog on diesels - can this be true??? :o

If so, I was hesitant about doing the EGR blocker plate and removing my cat, but if I'm not going to have to re-do it all every two years to pass smog, I'll be a happy man. Till now, I'd just assumed that every couple of years I'd have to take my Juice to zero, re-install my cat, and open up my EGR valve.

I'd read on this thread: http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12715&page=16&pp=10
that GM introduced the EGR on the LLY to meet 2007 smog requirements compliance, so I'm wondering why they did this in 2004, and if that means that I can remove my cat and put an EGR blocker plate in without Diane Feinstein coming to arrrest me.

Any input from other CA DMAX owners would be appreciated.

I know the 04 PSD has a cat and EGR as well (Not sure about the Dodges). Manufacturers are probably seeing if they can meet the new requirements. I know in '07 Kalifornia will start testing. Not sure but I'm willing to guess it will be on the same interval as the current gasser requirements (every two years). I'm not sure if there is some regulation here in CA that makes the current diesels with the CAT and EGR have to get smogged. It could already be in place. I know I bought a 2000 1500 Silverado in 1999 and when I traded it in on my LLY in February of this year I had not been required to smog it. I'm willing to take off and replace the cat every two years.

I know on the gas trucks and cars there is no smog for the first four years of ownership. If the vehicle is sold with in the first four years it defaults to the 2 year deal. I am wondering if when they start the 2007 smog deal if all of us with 05's or older will be in getting a smog done?

GM added the CAT and EGR to meet FEDERAL emission standards that went into effect in 2004. The existing DMAX could not meet these standards. The next step in diesel emission standards will be in 2007. They will need to do some addtional work to meet those standards, with possibly the addition of some sort of active catalyst added to the exhaust. (The soot requirement in particular is getting really tough, with NOx not far behind.)

By the way, Duramax LB7 diesels sold in our State of California have had CAT and EGR systems since model year 2002, so this is nothing new ( the 2004 LLY mod just gets the rest of the country). And no, you cannot legally modify the CAT or EGR on your DMAX. However, since no one is checking at this time,,,,,,,
