04.5 GEN 3 's loosing #5 cylinders and pistons. I have read at tdr and have a friend who bought one with the same problem. Whats the scoop? Stuck Injector problems? I never heard of this till I saw my buddy at the auction last friday.
I'm surprised.............

Yea... and there also are some with leaking Dmax high pressure pump seals (on the CUmmins) ... and some with poor mileage... and some with belts coming off...

But so far no big numbers af any serious problems.

I'm having fun with her just the way she is...

And you Broker.... a man that doesn't really even own or drive a diesel... your signature is a list of off and on company trucks that makes you look to be some kind of expert.

As far as you being surprised? Why would you be....

Sorry troublesHOOT......I'm no expert.Cummins never had issues like this......did they?Thats why I'm surprised...........don't really care since I would never own one again.I want to know what is causing the failures thats all.JEEEZ...................

I'm driving a diesel right now , but its not a truck, its a 3/4ton 4x4 6.0 Liter SUV .Need it for sleddin'. But hey , does that really make a difference?

You are wrong again,I own quite a few diesels........

Broker,

What you talking about boy? You heard of a Cummins that failed? Two of them?
Want me to tell you of the thousands of failed Duramax's? 6.0 Fords?

If man made it, it's gonna break sometimes. The real question is....how often?

At least Dodge is fixing it for him with a new engine, don't even say GM has not had any engine failures with the DMAX,I am in the plant every day and I know the problems those contraptions have.
All three trucks will have some problems along the way, even the Cummins.

Guys ,stop being so defensive and jumpy! Duh ,I asked a question. Duramaxes have history now so I dont need to be tought about that. So what is the scoop on the 25 year old engine design?

Obviously there is an injector problem,my dealer has seen one with a melted piston and it was due to an injector from what I was told,it was a 600 Cummins.
Also the 2nd generation Dodge had some problems with # 6 getting hot,but not sure how extensive it was.
I am glad to see they are not giving him any flack and repairing it.

Well troll, it's like this.

They added some parts from a Duramax. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
And that ain't no joke.

And I'm pretty sure it's a 40 year old engine design, not 25 (but I could be wrong). Cummins' corporate policy is to have evolution of current engine designs if there's nothing wrong with the basic motor. And it just so happens that this series of engine has proven itself to be really tough and reliable. Are there problems? Damn right there are, nothing's perfect.

From what I've heard, the injector failures are few and far between, but they happen. Also as far as I can tell they primarily afflict people who just drive short distances and don't use their trucks for actual truck work. What it comes down to is you may or may not have problems either way. I bought the truck I thought was least likely to have problems. So far, I've been right.

I was wondering if the Bosch design/fab is the issue.............JEEEZZZ.

My cousin has a 98.5 Dodge 2500 Cummins 6 speed. He knows first hand about #6 getting hot. First he burned up the piston and scored the cylinder. Then several months later after fixing that he found a crack in the block (#53). So he had to buy a new short block. The only engine upgrades are a set of Cummins 275 injectors 4" exhaust w/o muffler, egt/boost & fuel pressure gauges (factory lift pump got weak and he lost a vp44 so he watches the fuel pressure like a hawk now). BTW, he was over 100K when all this happened (except vp44 going out) so everything was out of pocket.

Who knows what will happen to a beaten Dmax in the 100-200,000 mile range.

The truck I had before this one was a 2000,every mile was hard miles, towed heavy everyday,in 120,000 miles it had DD1 injectors,a VA box and a full set of gauges and straight through exhaust and to top it off it had a #53 block, the problems are rare with these engines, injector problems are rare, this truck is still going strong today, only thing on the engine that had to be replaced was the lift pump and a pully,I wish I had kept it.

true.true true.
its all about bosch and the cost. do you think there is to much fighting to be #1 and not enough R/D time?

I like Doged the cummins is sweet. the truck how ever does not do it for me the chevy does. Now having worked on dmax ford and dodge. I will as cummins is most tech friendly dmax 2nd and power stroke 6.0 is 3rd. i like the dmax for its noise level and its good. its a question of when will the injectors go. Cummins is all wear. not as many issues. Now with the HO motor we are seeing issues. like 01 dmax....cummins will get it right. Remember dodge/cummins are 2 different outfits. Gm /isuzu are partners. so cover ups will be more to save face. If cummins screws dodge things happen. If dodge screws cummins things happen.

Its all about what you like......
