: Pyrometer interchange with Edge

Does anyone know of a pyrometer that will interchange with the probe and wires of the Edge/Attitude. I'd like to be able to just disconnect the two sending wires and reconnect them to a guage when I pull the Edge/Attitude out for dealership work. Thanks

I believe it is a standard thermocouple that is used by Edge and most pyrometers. I have an Autometer pyrometer which used was installed post turbo. I had a new probe installed in the exhaust manofold. They used a new probe, one from a Edge/Attitude kit. It works fine.

If I remember correctly when talking with Edge and Autometer techs they said that the probe is set up for the system in a specific length. It may not work correctly if swapped out with another. But like I said "If I remember correctly".

Well as ak said, they are setup for specific situations with the cable length being the most critical part. But to some extent that can change depending on the manufacturer. The older systems were a probe producing a minute amount of electricity as the temps went up and was read by the gauge. Those are very susceptible to any change of the probe or cable length.

I've got an AutoMeter gauge that I install with a black Lexan mount in the Attitude mounting area when the truck goes to the stealer, and just hook it up to the Edge probe wires. The cable for the AutoMeter is just left in place running down the left side pillar, under the dash and through the firewall, when I re-install the Attitude and the wires hook up right near the UHFP where they would normally hook to the Juice. The AutoMeter gauge requires a 12volt power supply to the gauge, so changes are not as critical. Comparisons I made between the Attitude read out and the AutoMeter read out for know situations, i.e. freeway @ 70 MPH show that while there is a small difference, it's very close with the AutoMeter showing slightly higher temps than would the Attitude.

Since that gauge is only used while the Juice is out, accuracy was not of any prime concern to me, just a reason for the probe in the manifold and the hole in the overhead console. YMMV, but it worked for me.

Zeeb- did you have to add connectors to the autometer guage or did yours come with the same type as the attitude? Accuracy isn't a concern, I just want it to work when I take it in.

All "k" type thermocouples are for the same temperature range and do generate a minor amount of current. That's how they work. The meter interprets the current and amplifies it to run a readout or needle.

For the accuracy we need it's not that important.

How is the dealership up there? I live in Carcross, Yukon and would like to come up for a little service work this winter. I have not had much luck with the dealer in Whitehorse.

DMAXYUKON, Well I can tell you from my experiance. For the most part at Alaska Sales they have been up to par. Recently I had one service done by them that took three times for them to listen to me and fix the problem. They origanaly were going to void the warrenty work due to me cranking my tbars, but they did the sterring shaft grease job that I asked for and it fixxed the problem.
Tony's I here is a little better, but only for Chevy's.

I ran mine with the edge and a guage off the same probe.....edge always read higher......if you gust want a needel to move so the dealer thinks its just for the gaust=ge youare golden IMO.

Accuracy isn't a concern, I just want it to work when I take it in.Just use the cable that comes with the AutoMeter gauge, or in my case I bought the gauge used with no cable, but AutoMeter has a production facility right here in town and they sold me a new cable. It's a bit longer than some other leads I've seen, I'd say about 8 feet since it went across the top of the cab, down the pillar, under the dash and out the firewall almost to the UHFP, so it's easy to hook up the Edge probe lead coming from the passenger side exhaust manifold.

It comes with the terminals installed for the guage and the terminals for the EGT hook up were already installed. Red and Yellow with the different lengths, it almost looks like an extension cable, but I don't know how the original AutoMeter probe hooks up since I've not seen one. You'll also have to pick up a 12 volt power supply and run it up the pillar and across the top to feed the gauge. I did that from the same panel your trailer brake control plugs into. There's wiring diagrams at gmupfitters for that panel and you can get a key switched power supply there. There's a plug for that, but GM wants $45.00 for it, so I took apart a trailer brake plug and just used two of the terminals in the appropriate area.

You just use the two small screws and nuts that you'd use to hook the Edge probe lead to the Juice, hook up the cable from the AutoMeter.
