Good read!
I was considering going back to green but after reading that article I'll be sticking with the Dexcool.

Very good article--funny I got just the opposite from reading it.

It points to the problems of Dexcool in that it takes longer to protect the metal. Old American green protects faster because it contains silicates and phosphates but it does not work well with hard water.

So--if you are like me--that changes once a year--then the American green is better when used with DM or DI water.

Either way--the most important thing is to change out completely and do that once a year for max protection.

Low coolant levels were causing the exposed surfaces to rust and wash off blocking coolant flow and subsequently overheating.

Page 6 left side has the authors recommendations till warranty is done.

Hi Frank,

I clipped the parts of the article which mean the most to me:

GM recommends a DexCool change
every five years or 150,000 miles,

GM ....................
For these applications, use DexCool because
that’s in accordance with factory
coolant formula recommendations.
Sure, the vehicle probably will be out
of warranty by the time you get it and
have to make a decision. But the OE
recommendation is the safe way to go,
and because you can easily obtain a
DexCool, it’s a no-brainer.

I've got 45,000 on the truck now, my Build Date
on the Duramax engine is 01/02 (on the metal plate)
so my coolant is only 3 years old.

I can't see doing over maintainence on coolant
so I'll probably do it some time at the end of
next year. I plan on using DexCool ;)

Two years ago at a NORA meeting in Tucson an industry insider told to use either Honda:eek: or Mopar-:t coolant because the formulations were superior to GM and Ford. He wasn't in sales, he was an ethlyne glycol recycler and quite reputable.

I have Mopar coolant in my garage because I have a buddy who is a Svc Mgr at a Chrysler dealership.

On edit- I want to add that the best thing you can do after you decide which coolant you are going to use is to mix with distilled water only. It's mineral free.

I have a '94 Lincoln MK8 that has an all aluminum engine. It's a carport queen and only has 88k, as I drive my Dmax most of the time and did have a Mustang also as a daily driver. The MK8 has had Texaco Dex-cool for 8 yrs, although there have been only 40k in those 8 yrs. And what I'm saying is the SAME DEX-COOL for those 8 yrs!
I was going to change it this Fall, but when I got to checking it out in radiator and coolant crossover pipe, it all looked so clean and good, I decided to let it ride.
