Way over due...

Ok before I get blasted I've learned my lesson. I WILL NEVER WAIT TOO LONG TO CHANGE MY FILTER AGAIN! Moving and hunting season kept me from getting to replacing my filter. When I go hunting I get pretty remote and don't like to fool with my truck before leaving. Well I was gone just about every weekend for three months and I wasn't about to pay the dealer $175 to do a filter change.

Took me about 10min. longer to cut it open than to pull the battery, change the filter, prime it and put the batter back in. Runs fine. Wheew...

So here's the damage... OUCH!! YUCK!!! And to think with that rust... Arizona is a dry heat. Yea right.... all the water is in the diesel.

Here is why I removed the battery and didn't bend the pipe. Just looked too much to move and didn't feel comfortable doing it. Battery was easy anyways and safe.

A sign I should have changed this filter at 6K... instead of 17K... :(

What I saw after cutting it open. Boy do I regret not doing this sooner. Live and learn.

Wow, that looks bad.. How was your truck running when you took that out?

Truck was/is running fine. Mileage is good and no noticeable problems at all. Secondary filtration is now in my mind... can't believe how nasty that thing was. I've been hearing from other diesel guys in Tucson that the fuel has been ok. NOT!

question... what's the float like thing on the WIF connector for? My first time on the filter.

the float is the actual WIF sensor. It will float in Water. and its supposed to trigger the light...

The scary part is some of that junk went through the filter. Later! Frank

my question is why is that so scary:???
what are fuel filters designed to do, just what this is done, remove the grit in fuel, if the fuel filter is over loaded with grit it restricts the fuel, if it did not, it would not matter if you had 10miles or 30000 miles, i have a fleet of diesels and change them ussally once a year or when i notice a power loss from restriction, and never had a injector problem to date???
my duramax so far i have changed 2 filters and both were used up completly(35000 miles each) and over 20k on the third, and no problems with the fuel system, i would never be woried to use a filter up, my two cents

I was helping our custom combiner from texas the other day and we were talking about duramax trucks because he has an 03 with 70000 miles he bought about a year and half ago. Anyway he said a few weeks ago it started running crappy so he changed the fuel filter. I asked him how often he usually changed it and he said that was the first time he had changed it. He thought he had gotten some crud from the fuel station where he filled up because they were nearly empty. He said he wouldn't have changed the filter if it hadn't started running bad. Sad thing is he maintains the combines a lot better than that but not his new pickup... On the plus side his average mileage for the life of the truck was 19.6 when I looked.

Water should not be in the fuel. If it is the filter system is designed to trap the water so it doesn't get to the fuel rail and on to the combustion chamber. The filter itself will continue to filter unil it gets plugged up enough and then even the fuel won't be able to get through it. This is something I definately won't skimp on with my truck. Change the filter(s) on a regular basis. I do my every 10K mile.
