: Truck speeds up a slows down while driving slow

If I am driving slowly (aka less than 5mph) across a parking lot or a field or something and am just barely giving it throttle it seems to want to "surge." It is more noticable by engine sound than by actual acceleration/deceleration of the truck. It is almost as if my foot is bouncing up and down on the pedal causing it to change the throttle. Is this the "surge" that everyone is talking about...I thought that was only during idle? The truck does not surge at all at idle.

Is it just my foot bouncing? :D

Mine does the same thing, I always assumed a reflash would correct it, but I havent had mine done yet, so Im not sure.

Mine did that when I first got it in reverse. It was my foot!!! It might be yours.

It was my foot too! Takes a little getting used to.:D

TSB-(technician service bulletin)...this is when mfr realizes there is a problem , but instead of a recall, they will address your problem when you experience it. I experienced the same problem with my '04. Dealership did a reflash(reprogram) of truck's computer and I have not experienced it since. There were three updates listed for my VIN.

It's both. When the truck moves forward, you move back, which releases the throttle, which makes you move forward, rinse, repeat.

The algorithm the engine computer uses can control this by "dampening" the changes it makes in response to the throttle pedal position changes.

I currently avoid it by just flooring the throttle all the time. Looking for new rear tires...

From what I've been reading here sounds like there are two issues that can cause the low speed surge. Turbo kicking in and out or software calibration. Dealer said mine was turbo not calibration and I had the same issue as DuckhunterInTN. Of course I can't test their theory out until I get my damned truck back.

They all do it! Some people do not feel it because they drive different. It is not your foot going up and down (I test drive brand new roads to feel for settlement). There is no cure as per GM info. Thanx Geo.

I had the reflash done and what it did for this was make the foot to throttle action much smoother, so when you do go slow on the pedal you have much more control.

Yeah but how do you explain it when you don't have your foot on the gas? Mine does it pretty bad when I'm holding it back with the brake. 04.5 LLY 2500HD 40K miles 4" exhaust Juice w/ attitude.

I was told on my old 300TD MB if you run up the idle a bit and cant hold it steady, then the turbo is working. Its a good check.........to tell if its working or not........ :ro)

Turbo, throttle position, or what ever, it is all controlled by the computer and GM does not have it right. Injector problems, knocking, surging, and overheating are caused mostly by the engine management that GM cannot get right. The last reflash, cures somethings (mostly moves it around) and causes others (light throttle surging). Try 4x4 low to feel the surging over a larger and higher rpm range. I have had the reflash (one of the first), injectors replaced, injection pump, pressure regulator, and EGR valve replaced as GM used me and others as R and D test dummies. Finally, they told me it cannot be fixed at this time (4 mons. ago) No one from GM has replied to my phone calls (once a month on the 21st) as to a possible date for the reflash cure. So, do not expect a great deal from the reflash. It does help to get rid of some excessive timing in the 1700 to 1800 rpm range (alittle quieter and a little less mileage and power) but it causes some other problems (light throttle surging). I for one, am waiting for the after market to come up with a cure first. Thanx Geo. P.S. Anyone have horsepower and torque curves from the same rear wheel dyno comparing the LB7 and LLY. Could you please post.

Ya I thought mine was surging too but found out it was my foot bouncing up and down, hit the cruise button and it stopped.):h

When I first went from gas truck to this truck I thought it was a little touchy but as I got used to it it doesn't really surge or act touchy anymore.

My '04 surges if you just put it in gear and let out on the clutch. When you try to drive it withjout letting it warm up it feels likes it's going to rip the clutch apart. Just had it to a dealer and after 3 days they said its the nature of the engine live with it.

I never experienced the foot rocking/surging until after I lubed the accelerator pedal to stop a creeking sound. Now the pedal is so free i'm having to pay attention not to let the rocking/surging condition happen. Stop one problem and get another free! What a truck.

After reflash my LLY performance is consistent with Kendall69. Hard to explain but the truck just feels meshed to the Ally a little better, smooth transition of power throughout the gears, quieter and better fuel economy. Pulled the 5ver home this a.m., its a little light right now at around 15k lbs, and I am still very impressed with how much better the LLY is towing. Almost like I got a tow tune for free!

I had the low idle surge before reflash, gone after. McRat, your just bad! ):h

Hard to explain why some have positive results, others negative. These are technology driven pieces of machinery and so much goes into how they operate. Never thunk I wood drive a twuk smarter than me? ):h Hopefully GM will get their hands around these problems soon! JJ :)

I have a lot of trouble with surge while running my dog in rough terraine. Going south for the winter and would like to get it fixed before I go but GM says there is no fix.

Took delivery in September of this year and have been fighting this surge ever since.
