I just reached 10,000 miles on my 2004, and wanted to switch to synthetic oil, and run 7500 or so miles between changes. Does anyone have specific recommendations?
I saw the Redline oil claims it is Diesel compatible, and so does the Mobile1, but they do not seem to be made for Diesels, and this worries me slightly. Also, I am currently running the 15-50W, is there any advantages/disadvantages, to going to a lower viscosity? I am in the Dallas area, so it never really gets too cold here. Any better oil choices out there? I will be using the Fleetgaurd filters.

Thanks for the help,
Eric

87-I have used synthetic with success on gas engines and personally think its good stuff. The CTD has 14 or 15 quarts capacity and with light duty use the manual says to change every 15k and with heavy usage 7500 miles. I tow sometimes and am going to use the 7500 schedule but with regular dino oil. I saw a Chrysler engineer say that they think synthetic is ok but never saw any benefit in their testing when the oil was changed to the mfg schedule. If I was going to use the synthetic it would be diesel approved and hopefully some company that has made the synthetic a long time.

Its hard to justify expense of pure synthetic but if thats what you want, ROYAL Purple wopuld be a good choice and unlike some of the others, they have 15W40 for diesels. I use Schaeffer #7000 15W40 which is a blend of dino/synthetic and runs 12--14 bucks a gallon. Bill Gisse

I strongly recommend Amsoil. My last truck went well over 400,000 miles and my present truck has over 179,000 miles on it in less than two yrs. I use amsoil everyplace you can use oil, and run extended drain intervals. I have never had a oil related failure in any of my trucks. They have a warehouse in the Dallas area, that is where mine is shipped from, overnight on UPS. You can ck their website at http://amsoil.com

What about Rotella synthetic, 12.99 per gallon?

Rotella Synth is a synth blend that is why it is cheaper. Rotella makes an excellent dyno oil product, but I have never heard about the synth.. I use Mobil Delvac 1.

I always used Rotella T and recently I went with Chevron Delo...... I noticed a huge difference with the Delo (better difference) There is a website (www.bobistheoilguy.com) that shows a wear test of different oils, and results of intake filters, fuel conditioners, etc. It also touchs on the fact that many synthetics do not have the same degree of anti-foaming protection that regular oil has (the in-ability to allow air to mix with the oil) Take it for what it is worth, but it seems that Schaeffers' oils worked far better than any other. None the less, I change mine every 7500 miles (due to agricultural use), and $6.99 a gallon X 3.25 gallons adds up fast enough for the little performance gain you will ever get from full synthetics.

I just bought a 98.5 and at the first oil change I was going to use the rotella but I saw that Valvoline has a 15w-40 for Diesel engines. So I got some because I'v been using Valvoline products for years in gas motors.I ran a Ramcharger 190,000 on a 318 with that oil and never had a malfunction with the motor. What do you guys think about the Vlavoline?

Use amsoil with a dual remote bypass filter and you will save $ and time and repairs. Oil filter (white) change 7500-10000 miles and black and white filter change at 15-20000 miles. Do an oil analysis and filter changes can be pushed out based on results. Oil change not required until analysis ($20) indicates. Just change the filter and add a little new synthetic oil. Suggest you search the forum for synthetic and lube. You will find input from lube vendors. . . .

I use Mobil Synthetic Truck and SUV 5w-40. Its the same as DELVAC. I spoke to a rep at MOBIL and they are both the same. If you go to AVLUVE you can buy the oil and also the test. A buddy of mine has 20k on the oil and it still checks out good on the lab. I live up North (-20F weather) and this is the only way to go.

You can go more that 7500 on any old oil!

Mobil 1 makes a truck and SUV flavor that is rated for diesels.

How come the new name?
Marketing. The Delvac 1 is not as easily recognized as Mobil 1.

I run Amsoil with the dual bypass filter and 15-40 marine diesel oil. I have just under 46k on the oil in my truck right now and my last oil analysis was done a month ago showed my oil is in great shape, almost like new.
If I did this again I would use the single Amsoil bypass filter since it shows slightly higher oil pressure and you can still use the regular (less expensive) fleetguard filters with it.

If you want to use extended drains, research it and read alot about it. If you choose not to, read about testing your oil by companies such as blackstone, oil analyzers, oilguard, etc. You can find out how your driving schedule determines how long you can run on any oil. Most people find they can comfortably change oil at far longer intervals than they thought they could.

Ps. I live in Grand Prairie, TX and just 5 miles or so from the local Amsoil distributor but I get my product directly from Amsoil using their preferred customer service. Its cheaper and the product arrives right at my door.

I use Delvac1 which I purchase locally. FWIW, the Delvac1 name is still used for the gallon containers but the quart containers say Mobil1 Truck&SUV which is purely for marketing to Joe Blow public.
