I'm shopping for a used Duramax 2500. Money is tight, so I am looking at 2001 and 2002. A friend tells me there were some problems with the 2001 Allison. I'm searching this site now, but would appreciate any info, as the price drop between 02 and 01 seem pretty big. If there is a problem, can it be updated or sovled with after market programmers? Any advice is much appreciated.

There are no programers out there that fix any problems with the Allison. If you can pickup a 2001 for a great price spend a little more and put in a Suncoast or similar tranny and you will be fine. There are other issues with the 2001 but not many.

The only problems with the 01 transmissions are Torque Converter drain back (there's a tsb and fix also effects other years) and TCM flashes for various things such as delayed 1 st gear engagement/downshift.
The 01 Allison will take more abusive compared to it's predecessors.GM likes to make things softer IMHO.

There is nothing wrong with an 01 trans. A few things with the truck could be changed for extreme performance minded people, but they are easily fixed as I have found out.
