: Need Advice - 2001 Duramax
macinco 12-10-2004, 12:29 AM 1) I am brand new here. 2) I have never owned a diesel anything. 3) I want one bad.
So with that background, I have my eyes on a 2001 Chevy 2500hd D/A LB LT that looks to be in pretty good (not perfect) exterior condition (really nice interior I think).. But it has ~123,500 miles. (local GMC dealer). I can get it for $21k + T/L
When I test drove it, I could tell it had not run for a while (dirty and was blocked in by another gas truck with a dead battery etc.), was not plugged in. It was about 45 degrees and (after waiting for the GP light to go out) it started right up. I was impressed (having checked into a few similar mileage fords).
The VIN is 1GCHK23181F105879. I saw an earlier post were some really cool tech ran a VIN and got the maintenance record.
Tires are "average" at best (certainly not a selling point, but I can get by on them for a while). Did see any evidence of mods like chips/exhaust/intake (but I would likely want to do some of this)
The engine really seemed to run nice with good power and the tranny seemed solid and smooth. (but this is the first and only Dmax I have ever driven).
The front end rattles when you go over bumps. Is this the steering shaft problem I have been reading about here? It sort of sounds similar to a high mileage car when the struts are worn out and rattling. As it is out of warranty, is this a recall that I can get fixed by the dealer for no cost to me? This rattling was by far the worst part of the test drive.
Also, I have been reading about some inherent injector problems for the 2001 and other years. Is there any way I can tell if these have been replaced? (Or should I even worry about it as it seems (to me) to run pretty sweet (compared to fords) ?).
Any advice anyone would like to give me to check certain things ot other things to beware of before buying this truck? (Do you think the price is OK?).
The truck does have a a plate for a 5th wheel or gooseneck or whatever. I saw a piece of paper that indicated the last owner (I assume) lived in a little town way east of Denver and suspect a lot of the miles were spent commutting back and forth to Denver, but this is somewhat speculation on my part.
Thanks in advance for any advice/assistance from you members.
Mark
Diesel Power 12-10-2004, 12:47 AM mileage is not a real biggie. see what the service history shows. did you check carfax for any accidents or weird stuff? injectors are covered under 200k warranty so i wouldn't worry to much about that. did you see an EGT probe or extra bung anywhere?
blnagel 12-10-2004, 02:46 AM Welcome and enjoy this awesome site. Someone will chime in sometime with the VIN stuff. I read on your post that
"Did see any evidence of mods like chips/exhaust/intake (but I would likely want to do some of this)" and I think that you meant that you did not see any mods.
As Diesel Power mentioned for the EGT probe, that is a probe that is in the exhaust manifold underneath the fuel filter. It makes you wonder if the previous owner pulled alot. Is it possible to talk with the previous owner? Good luck with your decision. I bought mine with 70K on it. SOOOOOOO much fun to drive.

akdiesel 12-10-2004, 04:05 AM Personly I would avoid the 2001 models. There seems to be more problems with that year than any other. Now this is not say that thes trucks have a lot of problems it is just that year has more than the others. It also does not have a couple of features that are on the year after that.
As for the rattle it does sound like it is the sterring shaft problem. this is apperent on any GM truck made after 1999 not just the diesels. There is a TSB on this. Look on this site for it. It is an easy fix for a do it your selfer.
The makers of the chips and programers make them so that they can not be seen by the naked eye. So when you take your truck in to get fixxed you will not get hassled at the dealership. Plus if this truck is on a lot more than likely the dealership there had taken anything like that off and pocketed it or sold seperatly for call back reasons like if you have a problem later on with it.
Mackin 12-10-2004, 05:37 AM Your purchasing dealer should be able to accommodate you on a Vin run and warranty repair and history. If they wont then ask one of the techs here in the proper forum. That truck could have been bought at auction and not a local trade. This may raise a red flag.
As D-Power states look for the obvious:Egt port in the exhaust manifold,Boost port in the wastegate bleed off or in the Intercooler pipes,Velcro, wires switches to nothing, empty hole where a switch might have been, exhaust air intake modifications.
I would also purchase a GM extended warranty coverage.
I wouldn't shy from a 01 all vehicles can have issues! Good luck and enjoy the forum,we'll help you as best we can!

JEBar 12-10-2004, 05:58 AM Mac's advise is dead on ..... we have an early '02 (w/ '01 injectors, 79,000+ miles) that has given us exceptional service ... can only second the recommendations to try and talk to the previous owner and get a service record if possible ... remember, a truck may have been well maintained/serviced by a non GM facility which would not show up on the dealerships service record ... when purchasing a used vehicle, it is always wise to have it checked out by an independent mechanic that you know/trust ... please let us know how it checks out

Duramax Dually 12-10-2004, 09:40 AM Welcome,
You are in good company here. Mac and Dmaxallitech and a host of others are right on top of this truck and can steer you down the right path. For reference, I have a very early 01 and it has been awesome with no problems other than the injectors which just started to go away but I have 101K miles. But like members have stated, that is not a huge issue now. Gm has recognized this problem and will fix without issue. The steering rattle could be the intermediate shaft if I remember correctly. Might just need the "GM Magic Grease" deal.
I would not fear the mileage at all. I have been steering quite a few friends to used 01's due to no CAT and the lack of all the fancy electronic stuff that the new ones have. Most of my friends want trucks that are free of all the fancy stuff. The LT for 01 was the 'Loaded" package. The LS is level down and even further free of electronic gismo's. All in All if the truck checks out, you like it and it runs good, Drive it away and enjoy.
If you purchase the truck, explore this site further. There are some great after market additions that you can add to increase longevity. There are also some good maintenance tips that will really make a difference.
Good Luck
Jeff

Heartbeat Hauler 12-10-2004, 10:16 AM I have an '01 and so far no problems so I don't think that should be a concern, but I think $21K is a tad high for that truck & mileage. I'm thinkin more like 19K before negotiations. Oh, and definitely do a VIN check at the dealer, with any luck the service records can tell you how the previous owner treated the truck.
JP
On edit: One more thing...welcome to the forum:D Also, if the above post is your vehicle the 4x4 & CC make a world of difference in price, probably closer to $26K
Max Owner 12-10-2004, 03:08 PM If the truck is on authorized Chevy dealership, the truck must be an exceptionally good one. If the truck wasn't, it would've been whole saled off (I would think) Round here, the rule of thumb is four years old, 100,000 KLMs (60, 000 miles) If less than this, they keep it on the lot. If higher than, it has to be exceptionally good to keep on the lot.
Was the truck traded in for another at this lot? If previous owner bought another truck, similar.... would be a good indication. Thought sales guy would have mentioned stuff like this, if it is the case.
May have to ask more questions.....
GRMax 12-10-2004, 08:13 PM My 2001 has 108,000 and I had to many headaches to list, prior to 70k [and I still would not part with it!]. At 70k [14 months ago] I took my Max into Eric. It has been wonderful ever since. I looked hard at a new 2005 and it was just not what I considered an upgrade. I am that satisfied with my 2001 [until the 6 speed comes out anyway or I find some real bargain]. Get a great tech [NOT your experienced dealership, GM certified, tech that does well on GM cars and light trucks]. Big difference in the local tech versus a Max tech. No comparison. Of course, following this forum would help a lot. This is a sharp Max group here and you could end with a great truck, depending on how much you want to invest. Every upgrade Eric did, was worth every penny. Good Luck!
arguy 12-10-2004, 08:21 PM  I'd be a little worried about the fuel rail issue. Might be a different problem that was never repaired properly.

macinco 12-10-2004, 11:52 PM Wow, thanks to all that replied. I am doing a lot of reading on this site. arguy said: "I'd be a little worried about the fuel rail issue. Might be a different problem that was never repaired properly." I saw that and am concerned. Wish I knew more about "fuel rails" but I will do some more research. I also looks like the owner got stranded a couple times and had to be towed? Sounds like a lot of fuel system problems, but don't see any injector or pump replacements.
Did anyone look at the mileage buildup pattern? Seems like the guy put BUNCHES of miles on in very short times, and at other times, put hardly any on for longer periods of time. Anyone have any ideas what kind of use that would indicate?
Another question: what is the easiest way for me to confirm (or refute) that the steering shaft is causing the rattle? Can I grab it and shake or something like that? I am going to have a tough time getting back up to see the truck and talk to the sales guy I have been dealing with for a few days (early next week?) I don't have the previous owners name (only a town), and I am inclined to think the dealer won't give it to me, and in general, I don't trust car salesman (to ask them what they know about the history/use, whether it was bought at an auction or trading in for another duramax truck). The truck is at a GMC dealership which looks like it specializes in trucks.
Thanks for all your help so far, especially the VIN run! I will keep reading and such and go hopefully armed with a buch of pertinent questions and things to examine. It sounds like I would have to take the fuel filter off to look for egt evidence.
On the other hand, if I deliberate too long, i will probably talk myself out of it....LOL
akdiesel 12-11-2004, 01:24 AM This truck looks like someone got rid of it due to the problems they have had. More than likely the milage answer was due to being in the shop for awhile.
If this was a good truck why did they get rid of it?
Dealers are leagaly suppose to give you information on the vehicle if asked. If you do not ask the correct questions they will not give you the correct answer. They are in the buisness to make money not freinds.
Max Owner 12-11-2004, 07:55 PM Lots of people have traded up to new Max's, on this forum. Why I don't know. But they have bought another one. Gotta say something.....
Maybe a better one will come along. If you are unsure, don't do it.
