I just got my truck back after having 2 injectors replaced. The truck is running great again.
The service writer called and told me that my vacuum was at 4.5 and that my filters needed to be changed. The filters that I am using are a CAT filter on the frame rail and OEM on the engine. The filters were changed 2 weeks ago and I thought that 4.5 is acceptable and he said that 1 is acceptable and 4.5 is a clogged filter. Can anyone provide some numbers for what is and is not acceptable.

he is not taking into acct your Nicktane filter. That will put a bit more load on the sytem then just the OEM by itself. If you know you changed the filters then put the ball in his court, say fine, you change the filter and if the reading is still 4.5, then tell him you wont pay for the filter. If it goes down to the 1 that he is looking for, then you'll pay... Bet you get a freebie....

With the double filter mine reads almost 3 when both are new.

The vacuum will never get close to 1 (even with a new filter). The lowest I have ever seen the vacuum is about 2.25 inHg (on a new filter). So that would be a good bet with the dealer.

The OEM gauge used for vacuum measurement is a Kent Moore J-44638 (http://community.webshots.com/album/73314886FLnSco)
JK has put together an improved version: Kennedy Diesel Restriction/Pressure Gauge (http://www.kennedydiesel.com/detail.cfm?ID=289)

Open the hood of your truck and look to the left of the alternator. There is what appears to be a capped Schraeder quick disconnect valve. You just plug in the Kent Moore gauge to that Schraeder valve, let the truck idle and take a measurement. Extremely easy. Two minutes tops.
