Im curious as to what years / generation have the best dmax to date. Im a Cummins owner right now and am doing some research. Anything to stear clear of? What years are known for injector issues? Any other issues? Thanks. Smokes

It depends on what your plans are for it. If you are going to leave it stock or just add a tuner then I would say an LBZ would be your best choice. If you want to do an all out build then I would say LB7 just because they've been around longer so you can get it cheaper and probably find parts for it easier.

01-02 seem to have the most issues with injectors and 03-04 LB7s to a smaller extent.
04-05 LLYs sometimes have overheating issues.
It's not uncommon for them to shorten rods and blow out the side of the block if it gets too far out of spec.
LBZ have had some piston cracking issues when running aftermarket turbos and dual fuelers, but I haven't heard of many cracked pistons lately.
I haven't heard much about the new LMMs. They seem to be a pretty solid engine, but they do have the DPF and other new emissions stuff.

With that said, my GMC dealer (who is also a good friend) says LLY was best engine built.
I was considering trading in my LLY for LMM and he said don't do it, keep the LLY.
You would think he would want the sale.

I had the LLY and never had a problem with it. Lots of stories of overheating, but I never experienced it, although the fan ran a lot. It was chipped with the Edge Juice and I didn't hammer it much but the engine performed well in all circumstances, towing, commuting and just horsin' around. Solid motor from my experience. I now have the LMM and can't complain either (except it's so damn quiet. I need SOME diesel noise!). This one is bone stock and will be for awhile, I'm afraid. The concensus here is to get the LBZ, and I can't offer an opinion on that, but I don't think you can make a BAD decision. Good luck with whatever you end up with......

We should all answer his other questions though....any issues like injectors or other components breaking or being a weak link? But I'm sure that all matters on what his plans are for the motor...we need answers on both ends! Looks like the score so far is:
LBZ: 6
LB7: 3
LLY: 1
LMM: 1

I'm sure the TTPA points champs would have some knowledeable input on this subject.:rolleyes:

If you want to build a monster you will want to build an LBZ short block with an LLY fuel system, I call it the LLZ. LBZ fuel system has come along way and may soon be the one to have on the monster motor. LB7 is like gen one cummins, time to move on to somthing bigger and better :D

LBZ would be my first choice
LB7 would be my second choice
06 LLY my third choice
I would not own an 04 or 05 LLY

LBZ has the higher HP and Higher torque diesel. It also has the six speed allison vice the five speed allison.

LLY HP and torque are not much higher than the LB7...LB7 gets better mpg. 06 LLY is only a three month production run.

Speaking from experience I'll say that an 06 LLY is much closer in power numbers to an LBZ than it is an LB7. The 06 LLY is significantly under rated by GM.

I love my LBZ. Lots of power and lots of turbo whistle with a free flowing exhaust, unlike the older motors. And you get the 6 speed allison with the manual option if you get an 06 or an 07 model LBZ.

For a stock truck or with little upgrades the LBZ is the one, but not for big builds, YET.
