hey guys, i am currently undertaking in my first th400 build. basically i had to change the output shaft so it would mate up to a np205 transfer case. the adapter kit im using is made by tci. it comes with a new output shaft, adapter plate, new bearing and shims.

the problem im running into is the entire drive train turns tight. we have everyhing installed except for the input shaft and pump. you have to really give that output shaft a good twist to get the internals to turn.

we followed the haynes manual to a T and cant figure out why its so tight. only thing we can come up with is mabye that new washer is making everything off kilter.

the new washer replaces the thrust washer and 4 tang washer. from what i can see its the washer that goes between the output shaft and the transmission located inside the case.

all info would be awseome. thanks!

my advice, look up mike L,and pm him.i don't know jack about auto trannies, but aren't thrust washers a tolerance spec washer?not that means anything.but i think thrust washers need to be measured for proper tolerance.

yeah i talked to mike a few weeks ago and he told me to call him if i had any questions.

i dont want to bug him on the weekend so ill give him a call tomorrow.

it has to be some sort of tolerance that i have out of wack.

They will turn hard. As long as you have some end play when you push up on the output shaft, you should be fine. When you turn it, you are fighting several components. It should turn easier in one direction than the other.

compairing it to the other th400 i have in the shop the spare turns freely. the one were building is fairly tough.

when the internals out they turn freely. once their in and the center bolt tightened its tight.

well i got it to go. main thing was i had the main support bolt torqued down a little too much. i fought a few other things but all in all i got it back together. tomorrow ill tackle the valve body and get the bottom cinched up. thanks guys
