Yellowmonkey 11-09-2007, 06:22 PM I bought a 60 gallon tank/tool box from Northern Tool. Installed it with a gravity feed kit right to the fill hose on the stock tank. No pumps or wiring involved this way. It has worked quite well for me. I have heard that this set up may not be legal, but I don't know.

Thats not legal. Not saying I would worry about it, but its not legal.

The law actually says you can not have a gravity feed directly into a carburater or fuel injector. It says nothing about a gravity feed into your primary fuel tank, which in turn uses its fuel pump to feed the injector.

Thats under DOT 393.65. Up till at least a few years ago several states had laws against it.

Another instance where the laws are vague enough to let an uninformed officer make an interpretation for themself and give a ticket for something that may or may not be illegal.:rolleyes:
The cops don't even bother to stop the kids with the obnoxious loud megaphone exhausts on their rice burners. I would think you have a much better chance to win the lottery than to have your fuel system checked. :D

haulin-rv 11-16-2007, 04:06 AM I have ran gravity feed on a few trucks and have been through a couple weigh stations in the last 5 years and about 800k and never been questioned.

Personal truck? How did you pass DOT inspection?
haulin-rv 11-16-2007, 02:19 PM Personal truck? How did you pass DOT inspection?
Commercial. Gravity fed all my trucks except the current one. I have passed every dot inspection for the stickers, every stop in a weigh station, even a couple of road side inspections. Passed the IL commercial inspection too. My new truck I am pumping, since I wanted to pre filter my fuel.
Coaster Chaser 11-16-2007, 06:16 PM Fuel for the fire was told that as long as the aux had a shut off vavle( one that is closed when motor is off and a locking cap on factroy tank . Most DOT Officers would treat it as if it a balance line set-up ( two saddle tanks one each side of the truck ) that was from a NYS DOT Officer and could vary by Officer and your temper at the time.

Thats kind of funny, because one time I had a dot officer tell me as long as the valve was closed while traveling it was ok. His comment was that way you could not spill fuel by accident going down the road.
FlipinPips 11-18-2007, 03:09 AM So what aux tank manufacture do you guys recommend?
haulin-rv 11-18-2007, 08:17 PM Transfer Flow Inc.
If money is no issue, you want something completely automatic sure.
If you want simple, gravity fed, or manual control electric pump transfer then RDS (available @ Northern Tool).
biff426 11-18-2007, 08:44 PM How would you plumb into the 2 tank system pump from the aux tank to the rear tank??
