Hey guys. It was raining really hard this morning. So before I left for work, I set my Egde to Level 0 and drove to work. All was fine until I got off work. The skies cleared, and the roads dried up, so I set the programmer back to Level 3 at the stop light. All the sudden my check engine light came on. The truck felt just like it did prior to coming on. It ran great all the way home. My question is, do you think it had anything to do with me switching to Level 3? If I unhook the batteries and let it sit a couple minutes will the check engine light go off? I'd like to avoid making an unnecessary trip to the dealer. But, if its serious I don't have a problem bringing it down. Any info would be appreciated. And thanks in advance.

Why don't you get the code read and go from there? Go to a place that provides free code reading or buy a cheapo obd2 code reader.

How much do they usually run? I think I've seen those at most parts stores.

You should be able to pick one up for $50 or so I think.

It looks like it was an EGR issue. P1404 was the code. The check engine light went off when I was driving it back from buying the scanner. Censored ):h

Hey Haulin Ace,

I live up the hill from you in Placerville. Did you happen to take off the cat? A few weeks ago I pulled away from a fuel station and forgot to tighten my gas cap. Check engine light came on, few days later light went off. Took it to the dealer, dealer says EGR went bad. Still waiting on new egr to be installed. Dealer told me that if EGR goes out again, i might have to put my cat back on to help with back pressure.

It's still on. I was thinking about taking it off though. I had the gas cap trip the light on my old Sonoma, but I'm pretty good about keeping this one on tight. Hey, did you notice that diesel over at Chevron on Missouri Flat Rd next to Jack i the Box is down to $1.99 That's $0.33 less then anything in Shingle Springs where I work.

Inquiring mind wants to know.

Does the cat have any effect on the EGR valve??? I thought the cat was just to clean up the polutants the recirculated gas creates. I know it creates more restriction in the exhaust system thus more back pressure but I din't (I like that word) know backpressure had anything to do with EGR function except maybe helping to push more crud back into the intake manifold.

You know I had no idea about how cheap it was next to jack in the crack. Guess i'll deal with all the looney people and fill up there. Where do you work in shingle springs? I landscape all over the county.

Lakingslayer, I have no idea how things work as far as the EGR and stuff, just going off of hear say from my dealer. For all i know they could be blowing smoke up my butt, but it's okay, just thier gardening fee's will increase, LOL.

Hopefully someone else here (I know someone knows) will give us some sort of explaination on how the EGR and CAT system works.

Hopefully someone else here (I know someone knows) will give us some sort of explaination on how the EGR and CAT system works.Well there are a number of threads about this but they're old enough you might have trouble locating them.

The CAT and the VVT are designed to produce enough back pressure for the EGR to work. All the LLY's have CAT's but the trucks sold in CA and some of the NE States have a slightly different setup for the SES light activation.

If you remove your CAT, the truck will most likely set codes for insufficient EGR flow. The CA and those certain other NE States trucks will illuminate the SES light on setting that code.

Some here have reported that no codes were set with the removal of the CAT, but most have set codes.

Hope that helps give you a bit better understanding of what's happening.

Really? Small world man. Its the white GMC parked next to my boss Jeff's little (in comparison) Chevy 1500. His is white too, so everyone who knows nothing about trucks thinks our trucks are the same. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif
