: Turbo leaking oil?
McRat 12-08-2004, 03:19 PM Right after I got my truck, I noticed a little oil on the intercooler tube at the right front bottom corner of my truck. GMC said they couldn't find anything.
Now, 23000mi later, it's actually dripping oil now and then on the ground. The top pipe coming out of the turbo also has some signs of seepage.
Is it possible or likely that my turbo is leaking oil on the compressor side?
Truck runs fine, I just don't like oil stains on my driveway.
lakingslayer 12-08-2004, 04:03 PM Intercooler leak (http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15573&highlight=intercooler+leak)
There is a TSB. Mine is getting fixed as we type.
McRat 12-08-2004, 05:01 PM Thanks!
tbone1227 12-08-2004, 05:26 PM mcrat - do you think that may have caused your boost problems on sat at the track ?
McRat 12-08-2004, 05:33 PM Hmmm... Dunno. It's done it since it was new.
dpower 12-08-2004, 07:11 PM Mcrat.....get that fixed asap as the vvt is extremely sensitive to oil and will make a mess of the turbo in short order if it gets any worse.
lakingslayer 12-09-2004, 12:38 AM Stealer is still waiting for the part. Stealer says it will be in tomorrow. He said that the General told them not to let me drive the truck until it is fixed or they would be buying me a new motor.
BWillis 12-20-2004, 09:47 AM Mine just started, what was the final outcome of your problems. Is there a TSB number?
trapman 12-20-2004, 05:46 PM The tsb that they showed me when mine had oil coming from the intercooler tubes stated that it was due to the pvc valve and was normal. The repair was to remove and clean the fittings and put sealer on the fittings to prevent it leaking through. It was only a drop here and there though.
lakingslayer 12-20-2004, 07:42 PM Mine wasn't a bad leak but it was leaving oil spots on my driveway. I got mine fixed today. Time will tell now. They replaced the hose that goes to the radiator.
grizzy 12-21-2004, 10:27 PM I'm with you guys. Last fall I also saw oil drips on the lower turbo cooler hose. I took everything apart and checked to see what was going on. Not much to see. A couple of days later someone posted the TSB here. I haven't had any of my warranty work done at the dealer as the dealer is 55 miles away and one of the service managers is about 5mi. Just small parts and he takes care of them. I don't know if I want to part with the truck and I really don't know how their service rates. Most dealers in our area don't have a good rap. I haven't seemed to have any problems with it.
Hey guys, I know this is an old thread, but do ya'll have oil pooled clear up to the intake side air boot on the passenger side? If so, how can oil not be pooled in the bottom of the aftercooler, and is this where I am getting ssssoooo much smoke and severe boost drop (-12psi, but turbo is fine). In reading the service manual, I'm wondering about a ruptured PCV diaphram or bad valve. It doesn't have a test for them, just shows how to replace. Thanks guys...T
Kennedy 03-30-2005, 01:47 PM Mcrat.....get that fixed asap as the vvt is extremely sensitive to oil and will make a mess of the turbo in short order if it gets any worse.
I hope not because it is getting a fairly steady dose of vapor from the crankcase right into the compressor...
redneck45 04-01-2005, 09:00 AM Found this thread in a search, mine just started to leak at the same area at 18k miles, you can see it running down the frame lookin into the pass. side wheel well! Guess I gotta unhook all the bad stuff (juice, finger, egr plate), again and take it to the stealer! So if all they are doing is removing the hose and sealing it, what is the point!! Where is the oil actually coming from? the turbo? that can't be good!
snowsdog 04-01-2005, 02:55 PM Did the 25K service on mine over the weekend and noticed the same thing, oil dripping off the lower line. GREAT another day without the truck. To the dealer first thing Monday.
DURAMAX01 04-01-2005, 03:37 PM Mine had the same problems and I took it to the dealer and it ended up being the PCV gasket. The rubber seal was crack and was leaking oil. Hope this help you out.
D-MAX01, did you loose boost and did they pull and clean the aftercooler after the repair? Thanks...T
BCHN4X4 04-04-2005, 10:59 PM Well my almost new, 5200 miles on the odometer, truck is headed into the shop for it's first fix. Noticed some oil near the lower intercooler tube on the passanger side. Ugh...hope they can fix it. I'll keep you posted, and thanks for the great info on this forum, it really has helped.
redneck45 04-05-2005, 10:00 AM Yea, i just took all my crap off last night (finger/plate/juice) so I can take it to the stealer today for the same leak. Screw it 40k, it ain't gonna leak on my new driveway (well it already did), and I was actually gonna put it in the garage after all the spring cleaning I did--screw it it can sit outside the rest of its life! This is the main reason I have not gone further with my mods (cause of the warrenty work), every damn time (and its been in like 5 times in the last year) I gotta take all the mods off! My old '98 gasser was in for work like twice in the warrenty. Damn truck, got me thinkin about selling it again--damn price of diesel too! May just leave it stock--anyone want a finger/plate/juice combo real cheap!!! Ok I'm done now, damn plate banging my damn knuckles, damn finger stick cut/spliced all my factory wires! LOL! I should have just listened to the old man--quit pissin with it and leave it stock!! Old man is always right.
redneck45 04-06-2005, 01:15 PM Stealer just called, all they did was pull of the intercooler hose and reinstalled it using a "sealer"?! What a joke, and I pulled all that crap off just for this? Damn it again!
BCHN4X4 04-07-2005, 01:47 AM Got the truck back today, dealer told me that it was just some oil left over from production...told me to watch it and if the problem persists to bring it back in? Apparently they just had to clean the tubes...Well I guess dealer knows best. Hope this solves it, otherwise maybe the engine will blow and I'll get a new truck!
