: LLY p/s hose to manifold gasket contact.....

Guys, just was made aware of this, dunno how wide spread it is, but would be worth taking a look at it to prevent future issues. The drivers side exhaust manifold gasket is making contact with the p/s line.

Here is the issue:

Notice that the manifold is removed and you can see the spot on the line where the rubbing was taken place.

Pictured below is the old gasket on top, and the new replacement on the bottom, notice the upper left corner is notched on the new gasket to clear

Below is the truck reassembled, notice the clearance to the pipe.. all is well now.

nice catch.
Is there room to just snip the protruding gasket instead of removing the manifold? or was that removed for another reason?

thanks for the info

Dmax engineering has been wanting them back. I would say you could just trim it, but they wanted the parts back in this case

Could you just bend the gasket over? I think it would be a hard cut to make with the manifold in place.

so this may turn into a recall?

I also thought about just using a flat head or something and just bending it back.

Mine is making contact... Looks like the layers of the gasket are seperating.

so this may turn into a recall?

I also thought about just using a flat head or something and just bending it back. Its very possible....

If your truck has this condition, it would be worth taking it in..... At this time I advise against repairing it yourself. GM is collecting data on this and every truck counts..

Checked mine, build date of 10/04, had angle cut gasket. Wonder what date they changed them.

Just look at mine; the flange is right against the p/s line. Can I ask for a warranty repair on this??? What is the new part number on this gasket??? My truck's build date is May 2004.

I would take it in and have the dealer inspect it. I dont know the part number of the new gasket yet

Mine was build in 09/2004 and has the angle cut gasket already.

I'm going to call the dealer today since my truck is there already and have them look at it.

Is there a TSB with this information? I am going to check with my dealer first but I think I will just cut mine. I don't want my exhaust manifold removed if a simple snip will fix it.

Max, no TSB yet that I have found. Actually found the info on the GM forums..

Keep us updated. I am going to cut mine because I don't want it to wear through waiting for GM to release a TSB. Even then I would rather have it cut rather then removing the manifold.

Mine is hitting also April 04 build date. Could this be the power steering pump alignment problem with the belt ?

Stealer said mine is not hitting. They won't let me look so I'll have to wait unitl I get it back.

Mine has the old style gasket, but it clears the PS line by about 1/16 inch. As long as it doesn't move during operation it should be OK. Seems like it would be real easy to bend the part of the gasket that is sticking out to get more clearance, but I don't think it's necessary. Have there actually been any cases where it has worn through the metal PS pipe ? It doesn't seem like the gasket would be able to do that, even if it was rubbing on the pipe.

I am going to bend mine out of the way. I would rather not have them tear into it to fix unless it is absolutely necessary.

I had mine at the dealer yesterday and all they did was bend it away from the line.

Just looked at mine the line has about .030" clearence. No evidence of ever touching. My build date was April 04.

My '05 had about 3/16" clearance. It has well over a 1/4" now thanks to Mr. Screwdriver. Mine was built 9/04.

Will check mine ASAP. Mine was built Nov 11....any idea when the new no-contact gasket started to be used on the production line?

Thanks for the tip, I really appreciate it.

I have had a buzzing/ rattle type sound from that area that the dealer can't find, maybe that could be it?? Built May 04. I'll look in the morning when its light out.

Repaired...showed dealership the problem, and their fix was with a 3' straight pry bar and some pressure to bend the gasket. Of course there is documentation as to the complaint and repair. Just in case...
