: Down to three
fishcop 11-07-2007, 05:08 AM I'm trying to decide between the superchips, diablo predator, and the PPE Economy. I don't plan on racing, and am looking to primarly improve my fuel economy and more power when towing a 7000lb boat. Which one of these three would you recommend and why?
Philbilly2 11-07-2007, 05:25 AM Bag superchips. Those are for Fords.
PPE makes big power. Watch it with a stock trans. Big power equals limped trans.
Predator seems a little more steetable than PPE. imo You can still wreck a stock trans with one of these boxes too.
All are good boxes for what you're looking for though, just once you have a little, you will want a lot more.
C.A.P 11-07-2007, 06:38 AM PPE all the way it has way more potential later when you WANT it.
sixty 11-07-2007, 08:24 PM If your doing much towing in the mountains, I would highly recommend getting something to monitor EGT's.
LarryJewell 11-08-2007, 07:21 AM Go with the PPE, they have excellant customer support and a great product.

what he said:)
StompinRound 11-08-2007, 09:47 AM PPE all the way it has way more potential later when you WANT it.
only if he springs the extra few bucks for the standard over the economy
the economy is not upgradeable, what you buy is what you get
the standard will grow with you all the way up to their top of the line model if you want to go that far later
but if you want to go beyond the settings the economy offers (or level 3 on the standard), be prepared to start packing away funds for transmission upgrades next
I am very happy with my PPE... Nate DSTRBD (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/member.php?u=2818) here gave me a really good price and really fast service too on mine....PPE also answers the phone if you call them (that's a big plus in my book)
Don't know if one is better than the other but my use is similar to yours and I have been very happy with my Predator 2.02.
woodchuck2 11-09-2007, 08:44 AM I too am very happy with the Predator. Good power, reliable, shows all the basic engine parameters, reads/clears DTC's "not that it will cause any", no limps, and is the best bang for the buck.
RYDNHI4x4 11-09-2007, 08:49 AM Here is a great comparison between the PPE 90 tune and Predator 85 tune. LBZ

kramer56 11-09-2007, 05:35 PM I have tried both the predator and I have the PPE economy but with scan data built in it. My choice is PPE by far because of the tranny stuff they put into it. I tried a predator on 65,85 tunes and the shifting to me was horrible wheres as the ppe whenever i change tunes the tranny is so smooth every shift. Now the predator builds nice power down low where the ppe is a lil bit higher rpm but the power when it comes in is awesome and seems to be safer shifting under high power as well. Any tuner will build heat I don't care what one it is so guages is a must and maybe a cat back exhaust to start with. I love my PPE and yes they do answer the phone and emails as well but the money is alot more than the predator but imo it is way worth it. oh yeah stay away from the edge uhnless you like noises lol.
I tow about 8500 lb travel trailer in level 2 (90hp) every weekend and I love the power to get up the hills. The predator also is a louder engine tuner as well but with the LLY its already loud so........ My egts towing run uphill at about 1200-1365 but flat road is about 600-900. The altitude and climate(temp, humidity, etc) will also have a great affect on egts also so keep that in mind.
As far as mpg PPE was getting me around 14-17 around town tops, b4 PPE stock was about 12-14 and thats driving like my gramma so these trucks suck for mpgs imo but the power and ability to do what you want is the greatest feeling.
If i were you I would go for the PPE but I shouldn't say anything like that because Nick will kill me for dissing the predator, I think he makes out with his Predator but it isn't veryfied yet lmao.
1lowdiesel 11-09-2007, 05:42 PM i agree 100%. we have great feedback from the ppe stuff. i've had a couple people complain about the same shifting thing that kramer is talking about and some other issues w/ the odometer not reading right. the only thing i don't agree w/ is the edge noise, i don't have any problems w/ mine. now the bully dog i had that's a different story.
kramer56 11-09-2007, 05:49 PM lol hey Kyle. You sold me my unit. And man I thank you for it. This Ted btw from NY. And guys they do have a cool site to check out to see everything you need/want. I have a credit there and I need to think 0f something to buy with it but what do i need?
1lowdiesel 11-09-2007, 06:16 PM hey whats up man your welcome lol. a5k, duel fuelers, stage 6 trans that's what you need. you could plow snow at like 100mph and double your money lol
seriously though you could do the egr blocker for starters. and the bd manifold.
Unit453 11-09-2007, 06:25 PM If your concern is for towing performance, why wouldnt you consider the Hypertech?
llybyppe 11-10-2007, 01:52 AM I run the PPE and it runs perfect no check engine lights or anything and it hauls ass. Dont try to run in the big tune numbers belive me. new transmission. but then you can run what ever you want. Great gain in mpg and pulls great.
kramer56 11-11-2007, 05:55 PM If your concern is for towing performance, why wouldnt you consider the Hypertech?
He did not bring it upso niether did I. It is pretty safe tho. Maybe he didn't do any research on that one Nick, enlighten him with a link for comparisons and maybe a dyno chart.
ditch witch 11-11-2007, 06:20 PM i would go ppe all the way. smooth power, able to make tranny learn quicker... so easier on the tranny. and my egts are very good. in mode 1 might hit 1100 towing 10000 lbs and has plenty of power still. just drove back from cabin today in mode 4 with just added timing and no added fuel at cruise set at 68 and got 21 mpg. and will burn tires at will at high tune. that is just the standard ppe. only paid $439. had the edge before and paid around 7-800 and like this one so nuch better.
kramer56 11-12-2007, 07:33 AM why would you not add fuel with ppe, i have one and i am just curious why you did that when you added timing. what does that do for you
ditch witch 11-12-2007, 09:23 PM just trying diff. combos. still has plenty of power and at 65 i rolled in to it and smoked good too. kind of surprised. just trying to get a good mileage tune. going to try mode 5 next with no added fuel. 21mpg is pretty good to me but we'll see if we can do better. now when it says add timing is that just when the injector is adding more duration(open time) or just actually changing the time that the fuel is squirted in the cyl. i think i get the added fuel option. maybe dan can clarify.
kramer56 11-13-2007, 05:22 AM so keep my level 1 in truck but say no to add fuel it will get me better mileage? there are a lot of options I wish I new what they all meant and what they did if I turned them off. I will try the fuel thing tho i think. The timing thiung wouldn't make sense to turn off to me because isn't that how the power is setup from changeing the timing anyways.
