I have a magnet on my old Massey Ferguson tractor (1957). Actually, a magnet on the engine oil and the transmission/hydraulic oil. The magnets stick out beyond the end of the plug about a ¼ inch. I am always amazed at how much “stuff” is on the magnet when ever I change oil. It looks like it is growing hair. I do not think it will hurt anything; all I can see is benefits.

You know the drain plug on my 5.3 in my 2000 had a magnetic tip. I didn't really look at the plug on this truck when I changed it... If it isn't then that was dumb of GM.

looks like this simple mod could be a very useful one. I added the fumoto valve , so the magnet can't help me. Thanks for the idea though. I will be doing this to my wifes Yucon.

i was just going to leave the magnet on the end of the plug but then i checked to see how strong it was on there with a wrench, it wanted to stick to the wrench. so i busted out the old micrometer and found that these magnets that were just laying around were exactly a 1/4". so i just drilled out the end thinking that the sides plus bottom would hold it better, and let it stick out the top just a little bit. holds in there 10X better! i have a pic of the magnets alone but i had a ruff time getting the camera to focus. i guess the pic is better than nothing.

the plug maybe steel but at what percent. it seemed like an alloy? it didnt want to stick to the plug very good, or at least the way it would attach itself the a wrench. at any rate its in there much better than if i didnt drill a spot for it. as far as why i put it there, thats because every time i change the oil now i can see it with out having to disect the oil filter, and besides i have seen lots of other plugs with magnets on them! i was board anyways!

Dude, the magnet is a magnet, the plug is steel. Get it?:DDunno that I would trust the magnet to hang onto the host mat'l by its own force. There must be some fluid dynamics going on inside the oil pan when the engine is running at speed ~ nope, donwanna risk my eng by having a hunk of metal bouncing around inside. Better to get a com'l unit that is mechanically/physically secured ~ not that expensive.

The magnets on my old Massey are physically connected to the plug, BUT the “stuff” the magnet traps is not. If there was a lot of oil flow, creating a lot of force around the plug, the “stuff” would not be stuck to the magnet and would not look like a bad hair day.
