There have been many post and threads on this subject. Many asking question on how to install, where to get, etc.

Who all here presently have "Real" train horns on their trucks. Type and style?

Pictures if you got them!

Sorry my pictures were on "photohost.com" which has been down for awhile. But most of you have seen mine here anyway, NOW lets see yours.

Any good/funny storys to go along with them?

There is not a day that goes by that I regret installing my K5LA's.

Well Nate, I've been following this and all train horn threads. No horns installed yet. Need to install a Supertank first and then see what space is left. Also need to decide which horn to install. What do you think? KN24, K3LA, or K5LA?

I took that shot earlier in the year just for shets and giggles. The one K3 is under my truck. The others I sold since but I have a nice K5 laying in my back seat now.

No I never did plumb them all together. I'd be afraid to break some windows ):h

So mounting these dudes backwards still lets plenty of sound forward? I have wanted a pair or set or what have you but wondered about mounting. Would under my tool box in my bed be a sutable location? I also kinda like the fire truck horns sound. Maybe i could set up my N2O purge to feed the horns, bet the track would love that):h So how much for a set of the KL5's with all associated air supply? Dont care what they look like. How much cheaper are the 3's? Any options for more compact under hood ones? I live in the land of salt and snow and plow so the underneath can get slush packed pretty quickly.

So mounting these dudes backwards still lets plenty of sound forward? ):h Rat, it doesnt matter which way you mount them, they will be heard! I've had people stand 50 feet away and complain about how their teeth hurt after I blast them.

I have wanted a pair or set or what have you but wondered about mounting. With photoshop.com down, I cant get to my pictures. Look at HOOT'S pictures of his Duramax. Thats where I mounted mine. If you can get K5L's under there you can fit most anything.

So how much for a set of the KL5's with all associated air supply? Dont care what they look like. How much cheaper are the 3's? It will vary. A general range is about $100. a horn. But some like the K5's will go up to $700-$1000+ depending on the condition. Tanks and compressors will also vary on type and style. I have ViaAir 450 and it ran about $300. if I remember and I got the 6 gallon tank at a surplus store for $15.00.

Real train horns are cast aluminum and hold up well. Others are stamped, rolled steel, painted or chromed.

check out www.groverairhorns.com (http://www.groverairhorns.com/) Great guy to deal with!Nice horns but they are not real train horns. A buddy of mine has them and they are no where near as loud or sound as good. But, for the $$$ and the ease of installation, they are the way to go for some.

As loud as these things are it makes no difference where they point. Just ask the guys that have heard my horn.

Real train horns are designed for the worst of weather conditions. Remember... they are mounted on top of a train ... often behind the diesel exhaust, getting rained, snowed and iced all their lives.

I too looked at hornblasters.com but decided against doing business with them after viewing their videos. They seem to think it's cute to blast these horns at unsuspecting people walking in a parking lot. These horns can do ear damage not to mention the occasional stroke. Not the kind of people I want to support . . .

Then you should stay away from them IMHO.

If you go for the real train horns like the Nathan's K3's or K5's, you can actually hurt people with them. 180 to 200 DB can damage ears. People within 50 feet of the blast often complain about ringing in their ears and teeth, jaw pain. The ground vibrates when they go off.

With that said, I have used them in a panic situation on the road. It only makes sense if its life or limb (or my truck) in jeopardy to use them.

You cant use these to scare people, they are a novelty and should only be used when people know its coming. Even when they know its coming it will scare the crap out of them.

This is the only thing that bothers me about talking about them. Someone irresponsible gets a hold of a set and ruins it for the rest of us. Cities will start enforcing noise ordnances, state inspections will not be passed with a set of train horns on your truck, etc, etc.

Get a set, enjoy them, but be responsible.

hoot
12-15-2004, 11:56 AM
Agreed.... they are dangerous and should only used accordingly. One good thing about the valve I use is I can toot lightly are blast really loud depending on how much air I release.

If someone cuts you off on the freeway, this horn is in order. But to come up behind someone and blast away is just plain mean and could result in injury to them or you, physical and/or financial. Here in SoCal, I am acutely aware that I could be shot by some mental case for blasting him. The point is, this is not much different than slapping someone in the back of the head. You had better be ready to deal with the consequenses. The world is filled with obnoxious jerks and we don't need any more, no matter how well qualified. Of course your sig should have tipped me . . .

Gun,

Go back and look at post #20. Begin reading there and continue to the end. Then maybe you can understand my post. Berk state that's exactly why he wants one of these horns.

Go watch the videos on www.hornblaters.com (http://www.hornblaters.com/), (giggle, giggle, I'm such a badass). We're not talking about killing people here. We're talking about possible injury and liability (not to mention obnoxiousness and cruetly all in the name of a prank).

But go ahead and blast away if you've got the horn. Rev that bike with the straight pipes at the traffic signal to show everyone that the louder you are, the badder you is. Maybe someone you blast with your owns a gun too . . .

CAN THE Nathan K5LA HOENS BREAK THE WINDOWS IN MY CREWCAB IF I LAY ON THE HORN FOR A FEW SECONDS? I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO TELL SOMEONE TO GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY WITHOUT BREAKING MY OWN WINDOWS...

I've had these on semi trucks (all for fun), I have been able to hear others, 3 trucks behind me at 80 mph going down the freeway. I don't know if it will break windows but I hope it might answer questions about safety or hurting someone, FWIW.

I doubt if they will break windows but they did knock about 10 of those crystal sun catchers that are held on with suction cups off of a large 8x8 plate glass window at my wifes shop. I was about 10 feet away from them so it does move things.

AGAIN, please dont buy these to scare people. You may get the attention of the jerk in front of you who cut you off, but you WILL scare the crap out of the guy right next to you and may cause an accident.

I was wishing I had a set when we were passing a truck in the passing lane; we had a concrete barier on our left and a truck on our right decided to change lane into us. We had the 30' gooseneck in tow and couldn't just blast out of the way going uphill. I don't know if he heard the truck horn or just happened to see us. We had inches on both sides.

Even with a train horn, it likely could have caused a wreck....

For those of you with Nathan K3/K5/P3 horns... anyone know where you can pick up new covers for the bells? Need something to keep the junk out of my P3's - which are mounted under the truck (right under the left rear seat - where the Supertank would extend to if i put one on...)

I work as a paramedic. When power is on to the siren/horn unit and I hit the steering wheel horn I get the electric air horn. With power off I get the van horn. I am nervous about getting the horns on my truck because when I hit the air horn on the ambulance, people start pulling over, out of the way. Has anybody here experienced that?

Yes..... that's the whole point :phatyo:

I have my regular horn that works with the steering wheel and a totally separate major handle that I can't accidentally pull.

Same here, I have a 3/4" ball valve mounted in the console with the cup holder. Its better than using a solenoid, you can throttle the amount of air like a real train and just lightly tap it for a friendly greeting........which still makes some people mess in their pants.

Where I placed mine is where my right hand naturally come to a rest on the arm or the seat and right where the back of the cup holder sits.

My wife gave me some grief when I first installed these but now she likes them and is convinced that every truck we own will always have a set on it.

I aslo am thinking about getting a set of LOUD horns. But it is not for the people. My 30 mile drive to work everyday is paralell to RR tracks for about ten miles and more deer around here than you can shake a stick at. I lost my '96' AstroVan to a ten point buck running from a diesel train horn. -:t I would just LOVE to be able to make those four legged furry varmint's do a U-turn. Let the real trains worry 'bout em. I got more to lose now than a little Astrovan.

http://www.dieselairhorns.com/sounds.htmlYes, that's the sound we like to hear. Going home on a very crowded freeway I heard one behind me. There were several semi's and it probably came from one of them. Kind of unnerving hearing that familiar sound on the freeway.

Got a couple of sets, a K3HA and K5LA. Gonna get 'em on one of these days . . .
