Got this reply from MSD…… So you they saying no thermocouple needed?

Where do these two EGT's (Exhaust Gas Temperatures) come from? Before and after the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) or what? They can't be from the exhaust manifold before the turbo, which is where I expected to have to drill for a thermocouple.....

Sir,
Thank you for your interest in our products. The 2008 should definitely work.

The latest Duramax (LMM) has two EGTs from the factory (and the Dashhawk will display it).

Thanks,
MSD tech

Well that sucks. doesn't seem like it will be able to display EGT's off the manifold

For a DPF lover and no-chips-for-me dude like me - The DashHawk sounds ideal - if I can get EGT's out of it....... I signed up to their tech forum - just got this response...... The HawkEye kit is some kinda add-on I think - asked about it next. Why do they insist on spoon feeding you info....... The key words must be "will be" meaning the HawkEye add-on probes if that's what they are - are not available yet. I read another EGT thread on the MSD site that said the HawkEye would be available "this summer" - Well it's darn near winter MSD........

You are correct, no EGT probe is needed UNLESS you want to mount one in a specific location and monitor it (which will be the available as well with the plug in HawkEye EGT kit).

I don't have a chassis manual for the Duramaxes here, so I can't tell you the location of the factory probes (although I suspect they are somewhere near the DPF). In fact, some of it may be calculated values in the PCM based on EGR and the fueling strategy and some other type of temperature probe.

I've seen some pretty neat extrapolations in some of the factory stuff using known physics of the system to give temperatures (like cat temps in the gas stuff).

to egts sensors in the dpf itself and one in the egr. that will be a cool guage if they come out with the add on egt probe. i would probbaly even by it mysef keep us informed if you get any new info thanks

Here's the final word from MSD for now.....

>What is the HawkEye EGT kit?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

>
Not ready for sale yet (hopefully the EGT one will be available via the web site in a few days ...)

Bunch running around in testing and seems to work well! Production kits will be available when:
- Parts all received in the system
- I get a sample and verify that the production unit first articles match the development prototypes in functionality
- New part number assigned
- Posted on the web

To get things to you folks quickly, I'm working with Edge and we may just have you buy from them for the first batch or so, since they are doing the assembly of the pieces there and it would cut out one step for folks.

Then MSD will start stocking the parts directly ... stay tuned!

So with a factory EGT sensor at the DPF you will sure know when a regen is happening......

This thing collects 100 different pieces of data. You can plug it into your PC and graph speed, RPM etc. So loan your truck to a buddy and there is an electronic report card.

Big Brother GM is watching - you can bet they look at that kind of data before fixing a drivetrain component........

ASKED WHAT HIS NORM EXHAUST TEMPS ARE FROM THE FACTORY PROBES AND GOT THIS INFO:

>
Normal running is from 450 to 650 with max boost at 10 to 15 when passing someone...

Regen is another story, both EGT's stay at 1100 to 1150 if you are running about 30mph. It lasts for about 20 minutes.

The regen does not shutoff if you are at stop and go traffic, it just takes longer to complete. Temps will drop slightly below 1100 but not much.

The Dashawk has a soot number that it displays which is nice. My truck goes into regen at 43 to 45 everytime. While the truck is in regen, this number will start to drop back to about 1.

It's very helpful. I was surprised how often the truck regens. about every 700 miles or so...

Hope this helps you...

Problem with measuring EGTs so far from the heads is you don't have a true reading related to known thresholds. IE, What should you be reading when EGT within inches of the head measures a [starting to get risky] 1300 degrees? Interpolate?

Nagghh... give me actual, accurate readings close to the exhaust ports.

I have this gauge and it works great for what I wanted. Here's a list of parameters that work on the LMM:

Things that work:
RPM, MPH, ECT, AAT, IAT, Load, Mod Volt, Map, Baro, MAF, EGT1, EGT2, Boost, Fuel Temp, Fuel Level, Filter pressure, Trans Temp, TCC slip,Current gear, input rpm, output rpm, Reg Stat, soot. There are others but I can't remember all of them.

Msd has a software guy named Ken Mosher that has been updating the software in the gauge since I have had it. He's great to deal with. He will post beta's on his site so that we can dowload them and give him feedback. It's made a big difference in the perfomance of the gauge.

He is currenly working on gph and mpg calculations. I have another beta to try this weekend.
The gauge also has recording capablities and 0 to 60 and 1/4 times.

The best part of this gauge is the connection, ALDL connector unber the dash. I have had the gauge conneted to 4 other vehicles already that has the can bus for communication. It will also read and clear codes...

Hopes this helps... You will not be disappointed with the gauge...

Sorry, we do not carry MSD. However, Edge just released their Insight Monitor. Sounds veeeery similar. :D

Edge Insight monitor: Part # 83400

- One simple connection to the OBDII port
- Displays more than 100 different vehicle parameters
- Full diagnostic scan tool and data-logging capabilities
- Performance testing (0-60 and quarter-mile times)
- Built in safety features: user-defined visual and audible alerts
- For diesel customers: additional sensor port supports either a thermocouple (sold separately part # 98600)* or wideband 02 sensor
- Internet updateable

They are actually pretty cheap for what you get. The monitor is just under $300 and the extra pyro is just under $80. We should have these very soon.

And interesting input comparing HashHawk to Insight from the MSD Tech Forum....

The Insight has fewer manufacturer specific features, fewer logging features, more preset profiles for trucks and fewer screens.

Basically, it's very similar but has more of a focus for the trucks and is simpler ... the DashHawk is more for people who are using it for more performance oriented vehicles.

Yea, they're always doing updates and stuff. You download the update from their website and then use the software to update the firmware.

The Regen Stat needs a little work IMO, but it seems to have 3 values that I have seen:
1) Not Required
2) Required - kicked off at around 47 soot mass, there seems to be another word underneath there but I think it's "Required" again.
3) Active - saw this when it was 5 soot mass, i'm still scratching my head
