just a quick update.. like many of you I have the edge and also ran into the known issue of the white smoke, surging, injector noise, etc... I have yet to take it back to the dealer..actually next week(vacation starts), but I have removed the edge completely to see if the symptoms go away until then.

Since removing the edge the smoke is the same, the surge is the same and actually my mileage got worse. I towed a car this weekend for a friend and used much more fuel than I normally did with the edge. It felt as though it had to work much harder as well. The fuel knock was just as loud or louder. A few weeks ago I towed a truck from even farther with the edge installed and didn't use much fuel and truck never worked hard during the tow.

Next week I will be taking it to the dealer finally and if I have to sit there while they do all the tests adn watch them update the code, I will.

I think you need the reflash. Push for the reflash they don’t want to do it for everyone that walks in the door.
I had mine done and it was fine, now it’s better than fine if there is such a thing. I picked up from 3-5 mpg.

I hope my mileage gets better, but I will find out next week.
thanks

Mine was doing the same thing, had a dealer in OH do the reflash and cured all the problems. I had it in for transmission problems and they actually offered the reflash, the guy even saw my Edge and didn't a word.

it flashed with the Edge installed? I didn't think that was possible.. at least you got yours flashed ;-)

Its possible with the edge.....only alters computer signals...doesn't change them

The tech said the Edge might overide the reflash, but like I said it's been working perfectly since then( aprox. 2500 miles). My truck had all the symptoms before, rough idle, white smoke, almost raw fuel smell, ect. I'm no expert but I would say it worked.

I had the reflash and my truck runs worse than before. Still has the fuel knock, surge and my mileage dropped from 18 to 15 if I'm easy on it. Took it back to the dealer yesterday and they reflashed it again. Then they wanted to remove the turbo. I said no thanks, I'll get a second opinion. Going to another dealer next week. 04 lly stock

bigblock...yes mine has that fuel smell as well, I can't put down the passenger side window or I will choke on the smell. that was my frist indication. then noticed teh smoke flying by the window.

Fireboat..I have heard a couple people say their truck ran worse after the reflash but the majority have had positive results and I hope I do as well.

I will know next week, but I can tell right now either I am just used to the Edge and its power or my truck runs worse without the Edge. It just feels wrong, not sure how to explain it.

anyways..thanks for the info and input

Braino .. See if you can get the Tech to check the injector balance rates before and after the reflash, in both park and drive. I believe I read somewhere that one of the things this reflash does is automatically balance the injectors. They have to have the Tech II hooked up to do the reflash, so hopefully this will not be a big deal. Since you are reporting more problems than most, I think this request to the dealer would be justified.

If the injectors are not in balance after the flash, you have some additional issues to follow up on.

I tried to get my dealer to do a balance test before and after when my truck had the flash done, but unfortunately, the request got lost in the dealer paperwork process. Wish I was there so I could have reminded them.

Note: The truck should be at operating temp when checking balance rates.

Please let us know the results.

BH... for this update to occur that is one of the steps they are "supposed" to do prior to updating anything. Its on that notice that has been posted on here all over the place. I plan on calling the guy today and making an appointment. Mine seems to be getting worse so hopefully I don't have any bad injectors.

1. High positive injector balance rates (over +4.0 in park or +6.0 in drive) may be causing white smoke at idle or while driving.
2. Document all injector cylinder balance rates at the beginning of the diagnosis.
3. There is an updated calibration to address the white smoke, high positive balance rates, idle surge, and a fuel knock noise at or near 1500 to 1800 RPM.
4. Install the updated calibration and evaluate the smoking, high injector balance rates, idle surge, and fuel knock noises.
5. If there is still a mechanical concern with an injector, and balance rates are still over the SI specification of +4.0 in park or +6.0 in drive, replace only the effected injector.

thank god.. just spoke with the actual Diesel Mechanic at the dealer I drove 30 miles to and then was told he was in class for 2 days..grrrrr.. anyway, the Diesel guy was very cool. I told him about my issues, he even drives a diesel, and gave him the PIP number, he looked it up and said to just bring it in and he would do the reflash for me and it won't take long at all.

So, this Friday I have half day off and will be taking it there to have this done. I will let you all know how it goes.
